"How much have you lost"

I had anticipated questions like these and gave considerable thought to how I would respond so I would be prepared but to my surprise I haven't encountered the situation yet at all. Maybe it's just too soon -- I have lost about 70 pounds at this point. I've been so pleased with the way my colleagues, friends, and family are responding. Simple comments like "you look great" and "I'm impressed with your hard work" reinforce my dedication without becoming uncomfortable. I guess i just wanted to share that although I expected the worst, sometimes people can surprise you in a positive way. I'm glad for this post though so I have some considered responses for when/if the inappropriate questions do come down the road.

In the beginning I had this little chart .  It lists an actual item so you can visualize (or not) pounds lost.  I started giving people that for an answer.  "I've lost an average house cat"  "I've lost the amount of cheese the average American eats each year".  Asked how much that is gets, "google it!"  I loved loved loved it when my answer became, "I lost equal to the weight of an elephant's penis!"

That one gets you some looks.  Especially from some older folks.

1 pound = a Guinea Pig
1.5 pounds = a dozen Krispy Kreme glazed donuts
2 pounds = a rack of baby back ribs
3 pounds = an average human brain
4 pounds = an ostrich egg

6 pounds = a human’s skin
7.5 pounds = an average newborn
8 pounds = a human head
10 pounds= chemical additives an American consumes each year

25 pounds = an average 2 year old
30 pounds = amount of cheese an average American eats in a year
33 pounds = a cinder block
36 pounds = a mid-size microwave
40 pounds = a 5-gallon bottle of water or an average human leg
44 pounds = an elephant’s heart
50 pounds = a small bale of hay
55 pounds = a 5000 BTU air conditioner
60 pounds = an elephant’s penis (yep, weights more than his heart!)
66 pounds = fats and oils an average American eats in a year

I found a list of weight equivalents - like 3 pounds is a guinea pig, 45 pounds is an Irish setter, that sort of thing. Every day I would check what my equivalents were ( 2 setters and a human head), and if someone asked me, I'd give them that answer. Very few people asked more than twice.
