Question:
Has anyone had surgery during that time of the month?

I JUST REALIZED THAT MY SCHEDULED DATE OF SURGERY FELL DURING MY PERIOD, SO I PUSHED IT BACK A WEEK. I KNOW IT'S A PERSONAL THING, BUT ANY OPINIONS IF I DID THE RIGHT THING    — [Anonymous] (posted on November 28, 2001)

I wish I had known that I was going to start my period the day of surgery.I had not had a regular period for several months prior to my surg. date so it was totaly unexpected and unwelcome. The cramps from my period were more severe and caused more pain than my incision and the Demerol wouldn't even help. I ended up taking IV Valium as a muscle relaxer.I can't even begin to talk about the humiliation of needing help to stay clean and fresh. The nursing staff were all very kind but it was still mortifing.Hopefully your hormones will not pull a fast one on you and wait an extra week to kick in.Good luck.

Most women get their period as a result of abdominal surgery very quickly after the procedure. I have read instances on here about women who had their periods the week before surgery and still getting one immediately after. How's that for unfair? lol. Any nurse on a surgical floor is beyond used to caring for women during their menstrual cycle. We shouldn't feel embarrassed to need their help. Easier said than done, I know. I'm PRAYING I don't get mine while still in the hospital lol. Good Luck!

How funny, I thought it was just too weird that I started mine the night of my surgery, I just thought, "how typical", and you know what, being al out there for the nurses to check every hour, lets just say the pain medicine makes even the shyest person carefree.

I had mine full blown for surgery. The day of surgery they told me to take off the sanitary napkin and put on these cotton-stretchy things for the OR. I laughed and told them that those panties wouldn't fit my thigh. I refused to take off my BRAND NEW underwear. Went into surgery with the new panties and a sanitary napkin on. OF COURSE after they put me under, they took them off. I woke up a bleeding mess. Gross.

my period ended the day before surgery so i thought i was good for a month. I was totally out of it for 2 days and when i woke up I didnt realize i had my period again til the next day. The nurses kept me clean and were very discreet about it. So really I didnt even know. When i was awake enough I took care of it myself. That period last 8 days , then 2 days later another one started for another 8-10 days. I quit for a week then started again. Since then I have very regular. You have enough to worry about, dont sweat it. Cuz it will probably happen anyway and you will deal with it and go on.

I started mine two days after surgery. I still had my catheter in and told the nurse, I think my catheter is leaking because I felt wetness going down my inner thigh. she said, "how about you started your period?" and I just started crying like a baby. Here I am, I can barely stand up, I can't even bend over to take care of myself and now I am having my period to top it off!! It was very humiiating and then when I had to call the nurse to get help to the bathroom and changing my pad (after catheter was taken out) they didn't respond for a long time and finally a very rude nurses assistant came and made me feel even worse. Oh I hated it. If I had it to do again, I would have made sure the surgery was done when I wasn't going to have my period anytime soon!

I started my period right after surgery - I had it when I got to my room. And boy, was it heavy. It was the heaviest period I've ever had. It was made worse by the fact that I couldn't wear underpants to hold the pads in place. Even two days later, whenever I stood up the blood gushed down my legs and pooled on the floor. I could have been humiliated by this, but the hospital staff had such an "all in a day's work" attitude about it, I decided that there were more important things to worry about.
