Question:
What should I buy now? Vitamins, supplements...?

I don't have an exact date, but after my sleep study results are in, I will be scheduled for an open RNY with BTC. I haven't met with the nutritionist/dietician, so I don't know yet what to purchase as far as vitamins or supplements go. I need some advice on this area. Also, is there a place on this site that has protein shake recipes? I've never really cared for protein shakes in the past...I know that there are differing opinions, but I'd love to hear which ones everyone thinks taste the best/go down easiest. Thank you! (any advice for nerves would be great, too!)    — vittycat (posted on January 6, 2003)

If I were you, I'd wait until after I'd seen the nutritionist to get vitamin and mineral supplements. It's best to go with whatever your medical advisors tell you, at least in the beginning. As for protein shakes, there is no one 'best'. What one person finds great and delicious, another will find positively revolting. The only way to find out is to try some yourself. Unfortunately, it's also true that something you liked pre-op may not taste good to you at all post-op.

I'd certainly wait until after the surgery to decide which protein to buy, even vitamins... But you could go to Vitalady and get several samples and have them on hand for when you come home, also sometimes local support groups can provide samples... my dietician gave me several samples... best of luck to you...

Linda Almonte has a lot of protein shake recipes on her page. (You can find in 'Find Peers')

Here are 2 groups that discuss both issues. There are recipes, very low sugar. Discussions of which types of proteins/vitamins are well absorbed, and people's experiences with the various ones. This was formerly the Protein Shakes Addict and Perverts http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-Protein/ New group, small volume so far http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-vitamins-minerals
