Question:
IS IT POSSIBLE TO LOSE ANY WEIGHT AT ALL WITH A STAPLE DISRUPTURE

I HAVE BEEN ON A PLATEAU SINCE NOVEMBER (POST OP 6-10-02) AND WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A STAPLE DISRUPTURE ON JANUARY 16TH THE REVISION IS SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 2ND AND I AM WORKING MY BUTT OFF AT CURVES AND DOING HOME WORK OUT TAPES AT HOME ON MY OFF DAYS. I AM DRINKING MY WATER, TAKING MY VITAMINS AND EATING PROTEIN ONLY AND STILL CANNOT SEEM TO GET THE SCALE TO MOVE EVEN 1/4 OF A POUND. I AM BECOMING FRUSTRATED AND AM WONDERING WHY WHEN I DID THE SAME THING A FEW WEEKS BEFOER SURGERY I MANAGED TO LOSE 15 POUNDS BUT NOW CAN'T SEEM TO BUDGE THAT SCALE. HELP OR AM I JUST OBSESSING OVER SOMETHING THAT IS NOT EVEN POSSIBLE TO DO WITH A STAPLE DISRUPTURE    — cindy O. (posted on February 11, 2003)

Cindy, yes it is possible but really hard to do. I had a staple line disruption @ 6 mos post op and managed to lose 10 lbs in the next 3 mos. It took all I could do and it was frustrating. I didn't know I had sn SLD and I felt like such a failure. Please don't feel like that because sld is just the mechanical failure of not being transected. The edges of the stapled pouch and the old still attached tummy just do not form scar tissue unless it is transected. Anyone who is not transected can come "undone" at any time. That is why it is so important to be transected. Make sure with your revision that you will be transected. I had my revision at 11 mos postop and now have lost an additional 60 lb or so. It is so different with an intact pouch after having sld. I know you can eat anything you want to with sld but try not to gain as you will have to lose that weight again. Good luck to you!

I woulda said no, not possible. But not for ME, anwyay. Quit beating yourself up for having a flat tire and start the tesious task of processing papers if you want to go fwd. Your SLD didn't happen because you are "bad" or a "piggy", or at least mine & Marilyn's didn't. We were just cruising along, hers was early, mine was late (5 yrs), but the damage was done and we revised. I was healthy going into revision, and while it was a full sized surgery, it was utterly uneventful and I went right back to my correct wt.
