Question:
Post-ops--What useful or fun things would you of liked to recieve after surgery?
I am going to visit my Angelette and friend in the hospital tomorrow and would like to take her a gift basket of fun and useful things she would need. What do I put in the basket? What would you of liked to recieve or needed or forgot to bring for yourself? Thanks so much for your help!! — dizzy (posted on April 15, 2003)

Hi! A nice basket with several books (Improving Your Image, Dressing for
Success), Different flavors of Crystal Lite Canisters; Caffeine Free Herbal
Teas; Salt Free Crackers, Peanut Butter, etc. Food items that she will be
able to enjoy and eat. Books that wll help her improve her image, now that
she will be shopping for new clothes, and anything motivating that will
help with developing a new image. Good luck!

What a nice idea! What about things like lip balm, mouth swabs, qtips,
moist towelettes, etc, things to help her feel refreshed before she can
shower or while she's stuck in bed. Also maybe a readers digest or
something with short articles to read if she gets bored.

How about a water bottle...perhaps one of those hand held blenders...no
sugar added Carnation Instant Breakfast...a little teddy bear...how about
some Odor Eaters for the sneakers that are going to get a workout doing all
that walkin' now...chapstick...how about a little sun visor for the walks
outside...maybe a bottle of sunscreen...we must protect our little nosies
now...ummm....some no sugar added apple sauce...sf pudding....Have a
Sparkling Day!!!

a purse size photo album, listerine breath strips, some wonderful smelling
body spray or a really good smelling hand cream. You had a very wonderful
idea!!

how about a little gift for her nurses, too? i always take a dozen donuts
to the staff. i know, i know, but they havent necessarily had surgery,
right?

A small battery operated fan! It was SO HOT in my room at the hospital.
Some nice smelling soap or cleansing cloths. Maybe some scented shampoo.
The best thing my husband did for me after my surgery, was stand with me at
the sink and wash my hair.

One practical thing that I found very useful. A pair of tongs or a long
handled reacher (that's what the PT people called it). Not for using to
wipe your bottom, but to be able to pick things up off the floor when you
can't bend over yet.

I recieved a goodie bag from my support group filled with wonderful
things.My favorite was Johnson&Johnson's Baby Powder with
lavendar&chamomille!I had such an itchy back after surgery.They said it
was from the anesthesia.A little album for those before & after photos
to keep in your purse,a water bottle,tiny notebook for writing down notes
on your WLS experience so you can update your profile!!

A few months ago I went to visit a friend in the hospital after her RNY. I
took her a bag full of goodies. I included a small measuring glass (the
size of a shot glass), measuring spoons, some sugar free hard candies to
suck on, and lots of s/f drink mixes and things. I included a few flavors
of s/f Jello Pudding and s/f Jello, some s/f Tang, s/f Kool-Aid, Crystal
Light, powdered soup mixes, etc. Someone did that for me while I was in the
hospital and I thought it was great. When I got home I was able to
experiment and see what I liked and what I could tolerate without having to
go out and buy a full size package of each of these products. I also gave
my friend a supply of 2oz condiment cups with lids. Our hospital send you
home with little paper cups, but it is nice to have the plastic ones with
the lids so you can make things up ahead of time. I used to even make a
batch of s/f Jello and our it into several of these cups to set. Voila! You
have individual servings of Jello just waiting in the fridge! The girls
from work brought me a basket too. It was filled with lotions and soaps
from bath and body works. I really enjoyed using those too.

I work actively as an 'Angel' for our local WLS community. A few things I
routinely include when I see my 'postie' after surgery: Lip balm, lotion,
a disposable camera, a pad and cute pen, a travel packet of premoistened
wipes (that can be used on face or body) and a few things that will be of
interest to them (I take time before surgery to get to know them, find out
what their favorte color is and such). I put them all in a basket or box
with a closeable lid so it's easy to carry it all when they leave. I still
use thing that were given to me by my angel almost a year ago. Have fun!
The travel size seciton of the drug store is a great place to get
inspiration! ~Peace
