Question:
Preop Testing

I am going to have preop testing on 5-2 and wondering why it takes 3 hrs. What exactly will they be doing? Thanks to those who answer    — Mimi S. (posted on April 20, 2003)

It depends. I'm not sure if the doctor decides what to order or if the hospital does. It may be a combination, for that matter. You might call and ask what they'll be doing. I had an EKG and some blood drawn and that was it. I was there for half an hour at most.

4/20/03 Hi Mimi. I am 6 days post op from having Adjustable Gastric Band, or the LAP Band. Since you are having open surgery, they will definitely do blood work and an EKG. The rest depends upon your surgeon. He may have ordered an upper GI and chest x-rays like mine did. You won't regret it, Mimi. This is the best thing I have ever done and I'm about 15 years older than you. I wish I had done it years ago. God bless. Terra

Hi- I had open RNY on march 11th. Following is what I di for pre-op exams: bloodwork, chest x-ray, EKG, ABG blood draw, pulmonary funcions, complete physical, and finally meeting with Dr. The time involved is for getting from one test to the other. You can check out my profile for a detailed journal of what happened to me day of surgery, while in hospital and after.

Tests include; a urine sample, bloodwork, chest x-ray, gallbladder ultrasound, ekg, and respitory tests. You also see a nurse, and the internal med. doctor while your there. Good luck to you on surgery day!! You are in good hands, the staff there is great!!

I had my pre-op testing at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, Illinois. It took 1 1/2 hour. I had an EKG, which took a total of fifteen seconds, a chest x-ray which took 10 minutes tops, three different blood tests which took a minute, and an ultrasound which took maybe 15 minutes. Best wishes to you.... Marcy
