Question:
What should I have at home immediately after surgery, what should I take with me?

I have been searching for resources to tell me what I definitely need to have in the my house when I come home from the hospital (ie protein shakes, jello, popsicles etc) and what is a MUST to take to the hospital with me?? I have searched bookstores, websites and everywhere I can think of.. my surgery is just 3 weeks away-and I need to feel prepared! HELP!!    — Marianne K. (posted on May 11, 2003)

Marianne, If you check the library I am sure you will find the answer to your question as I have seen this question several times. Congrats on your upcoming surgery and Good Luck!

Marianne, for me there was no essential thing to have in the hospital- anything I needed the nurses could get me. I did bring my own slippers and robe- didn't use the robe though. My parents brought me my own pillow so I could be more comfy. Like the previous poster said- search this under the Q&As, you'll find a ton of answers. Many suggest fans, chapstick, etc. I really didn't need anything though. <p> As for home, jello and popsicles are ok, just make sure they are sugar-free. Broths and soups are great for the first few weeks or months. Protein shakes are needed as well, but what you may like now you may hate post-op- so don't stock up. Goodluck on your surgery and recovery!

Don't forget your supply of sterile gauze, medical tape, peroxide,or some kind of wound cleanser, baby wipes is a must. I totally forgot these things and on my return home I had to send my son out to get them. Hope this help you. Hugs

Silly as it seems, make sure the batteries are good in your remote control, cordless phones, etc. Make sure the phone, if not cordless, is close by where ever your going to be recouperating the first few days.

Hey there. I am 1 week post-op LAP RNY. There were a few things that I would have gone crazy without in the hospital. 1.) Chapstick - your lips ALWAYS feel dry and chapped. 2.) Eye Shade - little pillow-type mask that goes over your eyes...great for napping during the day. 3.) Back Scratcher - this was wonderful for when I couldn't reach an itch. It also was good for reaching things, and wiping after the bathroom (just wrap a wad of TP around the end.) Once I was hope, I had been pretty well stock before I left. Lots of broth, SF Jell-O, Glucerna, bottles water, Fruit 2 oh (which is great). I bought little (4.5 oz.) microwavable bowls, great for broth. But if I run out of anything, my husband can run out for me. Take care..you'll do great!
