Question:
I'M 1 WK POST OP AND CAN EAT ANYTHING, WHY DON'T I FEEL FULL?

I AM 1 WK POST-OP AND ALLREADY EATING SOLID FOODS, UPON MY SURGEON'S ADVISE. I AM SURPRISED TO SEE THAT I DON'T GET FULL WHEN I EAT. I STOP AFTER APPROXIMATELY 2 OZ. AT A TIME, NOT BECAUSE I'M FULL BUT BECAUSE I'M CAUTIOUS AND DON'T WANT TO OVER EAT. IF THE SURGERY IS SUPPOSED TO MAKE ME FEEL FULLER FASTER, HOW COME I HAVE TO TELL MY STOMACH WHEN TO STOP, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND? SHOULD I BE EATING MORE THAN 2 OZ AT A TIME OR HOW MUCH IS APPROPRIATE AT THIS STAGE? I DRINK MY WATER AND EAT PROTEINS HOWEVER, I STILL FIND MYSELF HUNGRY. I HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING LATER ON IN THE JOURNEY, NOT 1 WEEK POST-OP... PLEASE ADVISE - THANKS    — Luci B. (posted on July 17, 2003)

Dont test yourself, I had neither fullfillment or Hunger for months, you loose that sensation so dont try to see what you can handle. If I wanted to eat it was because that is what I was use to, Around three months my body started letting me know okay thats enough, well that is my experience.

Hi there, I two am exactly one week PO and I am going through the exact thing, but after reading over some of the earlier posting on this site where this came up prior to my freaking out about it, I've learned to take it one day at a time and continue to just consume what I am suppose to via my doctors instructions. I would hate to end up back in a hospital bed, because I wanted to see just how much more I could fit in the pouch. Better safe than sorry is my belief at this point. From what I've read, this feeling past in time for most. But if not, at least we know in the future we will be able to eat a bit more. I'm looking forward to the days of my being able to consume 3oz of shell fish/protein at one sitting while at the same time still reducing my weight.

You will probably not feel full for close to a month. Right now you are probably on a pureed or soft food diet. Your pouch is swollen from surgery so it will take time for it to adjust and get it's "feeling" back. Hope this helps. Erika

I believe the feelings of fullness sometimes take a while to develop. That was my son's experience following his surgery on May 5. He was able to eat just about anything, and didn't feel full. The fullness feeling started to develop around week 2-3. So this is probably pretty normal. I think 2 oz at a time is appropriate for you, but you should check with your surgeon. Didn't the office staff or a nutritionist give you a detailed diet sheet? If not, they should have, but there are also lots of ideas on this website too. Check out the Q&A questions library, and look under post-op diet. As for the hunger, it will probably lessen when your fullness feelings develop. That was what happened in my son's case. Good luck to you - you'll do fine!

The same thing happened to me and I thought I was goinig crazy because of it. I was told that this is normal in some post-ops at first and can last for about 3 weeks or so. You know how much you should eat so dont test yourself by eating more. Use a measuring cup if you have to. Trust me, the feeling of fullness will hit you soon so learn now how to eat slow and to chew well. Good luck. ~Sidney~ OPen RNY 10-23-02 down 100+ and counting
