Question:
Anyone else thrown into night sweats following surgery?

I am not sleeping well at all. Hernia repair was Feb. 12th (WLS was 12/02). Since that time I tend to sleep 3-5 hours at a stretch, awaking totally drenched. The doc at first said fevers are normal after surgery. Don't think this is just a fever. I'm talking drenched--my gown, the covers, the sheets, my pillow (yes, even my hair is wet), etc. Our room is cool, the covers are not too much, etc. A few nights I slept on the sofa downstairs, and it still happened. This didn't happen prior to the surgery. Could surgery have thrown me into early menopause? Had my FSH level tested Monday, and the doc (PCP) sent me the results yesterday. Anyone know what 3.1 means on this? Anyone else experience this? Thanks!    — Mary Ann B. (posted on March 20, 2004)

Yes-this happened to me also I was 44 at the time of surgery. Probably was perimenopausal. However, after about 6 months, it stopped. I will say that my periods have been irregular for quite a few years so far. I don't really understand why this happens but it has seemed to improve. Hang in there. Carla

Yes, I've had night sweats since my RNY on 9-4-03. I'd never had them before, but they are sure miserable! My doctor said that night sweats are likely hormone-related: I'm 47 and I stopped taking estrogen right before surgery. Makes sense, I guess. The downside of taking hormones far exceeds the disadvantages of not taking them (the symptoms you described). I hate the night sweats and all they imply, but it's a worthy trade-off, I think, for getting healthy again. By the way, I sleep with a towel beside my bed, to dry off and to place over the soaked sheets, so I can get back to sleep.

I had night sweats when I had a fever. When the fever breaks you sweat. I would wake up saoking wet too. It was definitely the fever. It gets better! Good luck.

This is coming a couple of days late, but just in case anyone is still reading this...I just had lithotripsy (kidney stone blasting) and got this way-again-I got like that after by gastric bypass two years ago-after talking with a few people, they said it's from the anesthesia(sp), that's also the reason for the hair loss-which comes down the road-probably 3 months after surgery. The feeling that it gives me is like my skin is crawling-can't sit still and then the sweats and the chills-the fever is there-but it's not just a fever-it's the anesthesia working it's way out of your system-not menapausal at all-I'm only 37 (35 at the time of bypass) so don't think that...unless you are but it's a totally weird feeling-it does go away-the sooner you are off any type of pain meds, the sooner it will go away. Just my two cents-sorry for the spelling mistakes!
