Question:
I have a hemmoglobin count of 11.1. My dr. says no big deal, don't worry about it.

I was taking Centrum Silver, not realizing that it did'nt contain iron. I started taking regular Centrum with iron. Will that be enough to boost me up to a count of at least the normal 12?    — mamajulie (posted on August 31, 2005)

Make sure you are not taking your calcium the same time as your vitamins. Calcium interferes with iron absorbtion. Also start using a cast iron skillet for cooking. Iron is found in eggs, fish, liver, meat and green leafy veggies. Some studies are finding that the fat soluble vitamins found in butter or cod liver oil are beneficial for helping absorb iron. Also, vitamin C helps you absorb iron. I know several that take their vitamin with OJ to help. (I can't do the OJ cause it really bothers my stomach) Just make sure you don't get the kind with added calcium or you will have defeated your purpose. Try this for a couple months and then go back in for another blood test. Don't let your doc tell you not to worry about it as it could get worse very quickly. Carmen

Probably not. That will give you around 18mg iron and you'd need more like 150mg (ot ferrous sulfate). Iron is always taken with vit C, not with dairy, caffeine, eggs, whole grains, other vites, minerals or meds. Alone together for at least an hour.
