Question:
This is blowing my mind

It's mind blowing, I am reading about some post-op who have lost 60 pound in 7 weeks. IS THIS POSSIBLE, WHAT CAN YOU POSSIBLE BE DOING TO LOSE ALL THAT WEIGHT SO FAST. It took me a year to lose 60 pounds on Phen-Phen. I not knocking it I'm just so wonderfully inspired by such progress. TELL ME PLEASE> THANKs — [Anonymous] (posted on June 19, 2001)

I lost 28 lbs my 2nd week of WLS. Then another 23 lbs 2 weeks after that so yes it is possible. I lost 60 lbs with Phen Phen too, in 5 mnths. It has been almost 5 mnths since my surgery and I am down almost 100 lbs. Not only do you drop a lot at first because you are on liquids, (I was for 5 weeks) but you also do not absorb all of the much smaller portions that you do eat. It is amazing, and a blessing, and sometimes even unbelievable...but possible.

I had surgery on 1/8/01 and started at 263. It has been 5 1/2 months and I have lost a total of 104 lbs!! I now weigh 159. I would like to weigh 140.It has really been fascinating to watch this. I also have to confess that I have not exercised once!. I really do need to get at this, not for weight loss, but for my overall and longterm health. I didn't start at a particularly high weight but feel that I have lost relatively fast. It is truly a blessing!!

Don't expect this though! We all lose according to our body's clock. For me, I started at 275 (I'm 5'7") and my losses for the first six months were: 21, 10, 9, 22, 5, 5, and so forth

Everyone is different, I've come to believe that it has something to do with how much you have to loose and how tall you are. I'm 5'8 and started out at 310, surgery date of 5/14 and today 6/19 I'm at 269. I imagine I will be around the 60lbs lost or even more by two months, but who knows for sure. I think that taller people loose faster, ie men always loose faster. But whatever your height/weight, if you follow directions you'll loose it eventually. Just keep using the tool and it will keep working for you. Good luck

I have lost exactly 60 lbs in 8 1/2 weeks. I am very happy with the results of my DS so far! I have been doing a lot of swimming and trying to stay active as much as possible. My starting weight was over 400 lbs, so it is common for someone that heavy to lose that fast. I am not able to eat a whole lot, just a few bites and I'm full. I think everyone loses according to their own clock. It's really HARD not to compare yourself to other people, I find myself doing it all the time. My loss has slowed down to 4 lbs a week, for the past 4 weeks, and that seems to be working very well for me. I still have lots of energy, and am able to get in most of my protein without suppliments.

Be very careful not to compare yourself to others! I'm 5'7" and started at 277. Last month at 10 months out, I lost 12 pounds (my best month since 3 months post-op) and haven't lost an ounce in 3 weeks, even though I walk 2 miles a day in 90 degree heat, work in the yard a lot, and have been very good about my eating (I don't dump, so I have to have willpower sometimes). I found that consistent exercise can still take a week or so to kick-start the metabolism. It took me 3 months to lose 50 pounds and these 10 months to lose 103 lbs.
Am I discouraged? Heck no! I simply refuse to believe I am done losing because generally the loss tapers to a trickle before it stops. And, I knew that after having such a good month, I would be hitting a plateau. After all, my body is just freaking out since it hasn't seen this weight since I was 11 years old. Also, I have never been a consistent loser. I have always lost for a week and nothing for two or three. Some months, I've lost as little as five pounds, but I will be the first to admit it was because the little chocolate demons were seducing me.
Exercise, protien and water, limited sugars, carbs and fats will make the weight come off. Some of us have to wait a little longer than others. All of us will plateau at some point. The trick is to keep up the good work through the discouraging moments, be prepared and at peace that you may be one of those who lose no more than 80% of your excess weight and know that with all your effort, it will pay off in the end.

Just as everyone else has said we are all different. We all gain and lose at different rates and it can be for a number of reasons. I had open RnY on 4/13/01 and weighed in at 398.2 pounds and I am a 5 10 male. As of this morning I weighed 316 pounds, thats 82 pounds in 8 1/2 weeks. For me I keep a food diary of what I eat so I can see what areas need work on. I am fortunate to deal with dieticians through my surgery center and at my job. Very early on they pointed out that I was drinking alot of fruit juices. When you stop and look at the calories on 1 glass of grapefruit juice you soon realize each glass runs almost 200 calories. I was drinking at least 1000 calories a day in juices. It is things like that, that can affect your weight loss. We can still take in a lot of calories and not be aware of it because we are eating less food. The other thing for me has become regular excercise. I get in at least 2 hours a day. A lot of people get in the mindset that excercise has to be done in a gym with lots of skinny people looking at you. Well let me tell you my house has never been so clean. Things like vaccuming, running up and down the stairs, mowing the lawn can give you as good a workout as any gym. Whether it is 82 pounds in 8 weeks or 60 pounds in a year just be proud of the fact that you are doing something about the excess weight. Good luck with your continued success.
