Question:
Is the pain I am having next to my navel normal?

I had my surgery over 5 weeks ago except for the pain to the right of my navel I feel fine. But when that kicks in it is very painful. Mainly when I bend down of sometimes sitting. Other days its worse they others. I am going back to work next week and I need some ideas on how to deal with this without pain meds. I hope it's normal. What should I say to my doctor? I go back in 2 weeks.. Is this normal? If so how long will it last? Any help would be great. I on brighter note I have lost about 25 lbs it doesn't seem like much compared to some people on this site but I'm happy.    — TENA R. (posted on March 4, 2003)

Hi there, Tena! Congrats on the weight loss. Did you have open? If so, make sure you tell the doctor as soon as possible, you still could be healing, but I had the same pain and someone had told me it was probably gas. Turned out I had an infection which put me back in the hospital for another 5 days. And the pain wasn't always there, at first, then one night, it was unbearable. Better to be safe than sorry. But make sure you tell your doctor. Hope it helps, Vi. open RNY 9/23/02 down 109 lbs.

Were you open or lap? I had LAP RNY, and one of the tiny incisions was near my belly button, almost in it. Most people have the left higher one hurt the most, but for some reason, my belly button scar hurt the most, my surgeon was surprised. Mine was just healing, and they cut muscle around those areas, so it can take a long time to get back to "normal" But just as the previous poster said, you never know, so get it checked out just incase of infection or something. Goodluck to you- hope you feel better!
