Question:
WHAT DO I DO TO PREVENT LOWER ABDOMEN PAIN?

HI, I HAD MY SURGERY TWO WEEKS AGO. EVERYTHING WAS GOING WELL, UNTIL TWO DAYS AGO. I HOPE SOMEONE CAN ADVISE ME OF WHAT HAPPENED AND HOW TO PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. FOR TWELVE HOURS I HAD THE WORST PAIN IN MY LOWER ABDOMEN, BELOW MY BELLY BUTTON. THE PAIN RADIATED AROUND MY BACK. THE PAIN WAS SOOO BAD IT MADE ME VOMIT. I COULDN'T SLEEP, GET INTO ANY COMFORTABLE POSITION OR STOP CRYING AND MOANING. I WAS VERY CLOSE TO CALLING 911. I HAD BEEN WALKING A LOT AS INSTRUCTED AND I WAS EATING SMALL SERVINGS OF SOFT FOODS. MY SURGEON, DR MARY MURPHY SAID IT WAS GAS OR CONSTIPATION. MY INTERNIST SAID THIS WAS COMMON, BUT DID NOT SAY WHAT CAUSED IT. I AM BACK ON A CLEAR LIQUID DIET AND AFRAID TO EAT SOLIDS. IF ANYONE ONE HAS HAD THIS SEVERE PAIN AND KNOW HOW TO PREVENT IT PLEASE LET ME KNOW. MY EMAIL IS [email protected] THANK YOU, LAUREN    — LAUREN P. (posted on July 5, 2003)

I had the same thing except I didn't throw up. It was gas pain and it was awful. They gave me some liguid pain medication for when I went home and I took some of that and it helped with the pain.

Hi, I had experienced the same kind of pain before and went ot the doc and found out that I had a bladder infection, and had no clue, so you might want to check with your doctor, cuz after Itook an antibiotic the pain went away! Good Luck to you!

Hi, I get this pain a lot even though I am a bit over 5 weeks out. I live with my heating pad and use it wherever it hurts. Left side, lower abdomen, right side. Wherever the pain and bloating is, it is there til it eases up. Also some foods may cause gas. If you do refried beans, bean soup, things like that you will get gas. Unsweetened applesause really settles my pouch's nausea quickly. Just tiny tiny bites and stop when you feel any thing out of the ordinary. Sometimes it takes just a few bites. Chew like there is no tomorrow. Hot tea is great for abdomen and pouch pain too. I drink mine straight. Little tiny sips. If it gets cold, reheat it. I also take the noodles and chicken out of Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup and use that broth. It is the best to me. I do not dilute it can to full can of water. Just a little bit less water. Also, I try to make a conscious effort to breathe out through my nose any air I have in me BEFORE I swallow anything I have in my mouth. It usually helps some. I still have lots of air in my pouch though. I hope this little bit helps you because gas pain can be the worse there is to go through.~~Lise

Hey--I had this exact same thing a few weeks ago. I was at a conference and had to sit there with this agonizing pain. I had to undo my pants, that relieved it a little. I was in terrible pain the whole day, told the person I went with that I thought I was dying, we were both a little scared. After it was finally over and we were walking out of the building, I had the sharpest pain and almost dropped to my knees--I would compare it with a knife twisting into my guts. I told her we needed to go to the hospital and then BAM right after that sharp one it went away completely. It was gas, I am sure. Oh it felt so good when it was over. If I had some simethicone or something I would take that were it to happen again. I would try anti-gas stuff if I were you. I think somehow with our new plumbing it is more trapped or something, resulting in the pains. It is scary because you are afraid something is 'wrong'.
