Question:
Drinking Water With Meals--- Without Surgery

One of my friends has a question. Our rule for Weight Loss Surgery is no drinking of fluids 30 min before to 45 mins after. Does anyone know if this rule would be helpful in losing weight without surgery? Any references known to prove this? Thank you.    — A. Me (posted on February 1, 2010)

Hi Tina, I thought no water for an hour after surgery was to avoid over filling your new stomach. When I went to a seminar with a friend, the Dr. said if you drink during your meal. it kind of turns everything to slush.....& they want the food to sit in your new stomach for a while. Then thinking back to my diet days......water is suggested to get a full feeling before you eat so you don't eat as much. Hope this helps :-)

You don't drink with meals after surgery because it will push the food through faster and you wont feel full as long. Logically, if that is the reason, it would be the same before surgery - you wouldn't have the fluid pushing the food through. Remember, though that after surgery you should only have protein in your pouch, so before surgery, you would want the same situation. It would be a good experiment to see what happens - if you stay full longer after eating without drinking. Maybe your friend can experiment and see what happens.

I had the surgery 2 weeks ago and I tried drinking and taking medications about 30 minutes after I ate part of an egg. I almost threw up and I had a horrible pain. I'm thinking there just isn't enough room for all of that. My doc (CA) said no fluids 2 hours afterwards.

I have always heard that even without surgery it is not good to eat and drink at the same time. I have heard this from my doctor, as well as from friends from different cultures. I hear that when you eat and drink at the same time your food is not digested properly, so you are not getting all of the nutrients that your body requires. This is not goot, because you comsume more calories to make up for the nutrient deficiency which can lead to weight gain.
