Question:
Post-op : As a chronic asthmatic,I use a nebuliser 4 hourly,prednisolone steroids

theophyllin tablets ,max dose of Singulair,omeprazole,flixotide,oxis,atrovent, cetirizine , ventolin and saline neb.sol.Has anyone any experience post op.of taking this amount of medication? Any problems during surgery for severe asthmatics?    — Lesley M. (posted on August 3, 1999)

My surgeon made it mandatory for me to see a respiratory specialist prior to surgery. This doctor tested my lung strength, and interviewed me about any possible sleep apnea. He also had me wear a monitor for one night, while I slept. My surgeon was very interested in my lung strength. However, I have no history of asthma, bronchitis, nothing like that. Your surgeon should be interested, too. Isn't he/she? The only meds you can't take for about 3 days post-op are oral medications. You can use an inhaler, but your stomach is being vacuumed for the first two or three days, through a tube that goes into your stomach via your nose and throat. Check your asthma doctor for a means to administer your other meds thru the IV. They would have to come in a liquid form that can go thru the IV. Ask!

I am now 10 months post op.. I only have to use any of my asthma meds once in a blue moon. And this is coming from someone who is usually in the hospital twice a year for it. I too use the nebulizer 4 or 5 times a day before the surgery. I am not on the singuliar, or the advair, or any of the sprays anymore. I keep the albuterol puffer for the occasional weezing, but never an attack. Good luck.. Liz
