Question:
I had sugery in 2001, started at 350lbs. and lost down to 229 lbs.

I started gaining wt. back and went to see my surgeon when it started happening and he was very discouraging and told me not to come back until I've lost some wt. For me to go to Jenny Craig or wt. watchers or something because he did his job. I've gained even more wt. and need to find a Dr. in ga. that does revisions and someone that will examine me to see if everything is intact or if something has gone wrong.    — jfjones (posted on December 28, 2005)

Hi, take a deep breath and step back and look at the reasons why you are gaining weight? Are you eating things you should not eat? Are you drinking while you are eating? If you are following a good healthy diet and still gaining weight, then maybe your exercise needs adjustments. Don't sabatoge yourself. If you need to talk to someone, then please do. Take care.

You might ask on the revision board: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/Revision/posts.html and the Georgia board: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/GA/ Best of luck. Kasey 365/210 (nonop)

This is what most surgeons are like --- they operate, get the stitches out, then send you on your way. You have done well, but now you are doing what all RNY and other bypass patients eventually do --- they start regaining the lost weight. ...................The best PERMANENT choice here is not a revision, but a lap band. And the best place for you to learn about a Lap Banded life for those who have first had "gold standard" surgery first is to join SmartBandsters at YahooGroups.com and start asking questions. You will be able to find support and success from those who have already gone where you are now. ...............Don't wait til you've gained more and stop being hungry all the time. Check the yellow pages and start looking for surgeons who do only the lap band or who have been doing it for some time. Look for surgeons who have a good support system in place --- go to their LAP BAND support group meetings (not to meetings for RNY patients). ................... Theresa

I really really detest people trying to push their preferred surgery over another when it wasn't even the main point of the question. This is occurring more and more. I don't like it when DS, RNY or Bandsters come in and disparage another's choice because all they can see is black and white that their way is the only way. Ignore the crap about which surgery is best. You need to find out on your own terms without solicitation what is right for you. A revision of your chosen surgery or converting to a different method. There are lots of choices out there and the point is that us all being different, we will all respond differently. My personal opinion based on evidence that I've read contradicts what I'm seeing pushed by the bandsters, but it's not MY opinion that matters. It's about you finding the right doc to assess your personal situation and give you options, then you coming back to the specific boards relating to bands, rny or DS, etc, and asking in the appropriate venue so as to not have major wars ensue over passionate opinions. You rarely learn anything from such flame wars except how to be polarized and take sides.

Thank you Dinka Doo, you are so CORRECT. ALL proceedures can fail for many reasons, the bootom line is if it's not a surgical/medical problem we need to re-evaluate what we are doing to sabotage ourselves. No surgery is fail proof and no surgery is right for everyone.

Judith, I'm going to agree with Dinka Doo, the choice of surgeries should be yours and yours alone. I had the RNY but that was MY choice, I've also had family members elect the lapband, which was THEIR choice. Don't let ANYONE try to sway you one way or another, it's a personal decision and one only YOU should make. I'm sorry your surgeon was uncompassionate about your weight gain....unless test are done, he doesn't know if there is a reason for the weight gain, can you follow up with your PCP on testing? If you give us an idea of your food intake, water intake and exercise maybe someone can help you. I track my food carefully on www.fitday.com as I am very carb sensitive and if I don't keep them to a minimum I don't see progress. Focus on eating protein, preferrably dense proteins first (beef, chicken, seafood, pork) and daily products...that is where you'll get your protein. Make protein always first, then add some vegetables and fruit (low carb if possible). White carbs should be kept to a minimum, and totally eliminated while starting over. I'm not sure if you are aware of the plateau buster diet, maybe it would help you refocus and get back to basics. If you're interested in a copy of it, send me an e-mail, I'll gladly forward it to you. Have faith in yourself...you do have a tool to get you back on track. Best wishes, Dana

I want to take exception to Theresa's wording on her reply. ALL RNY or bypass patients do not gain weight back!! I will be 5 years post op on January 8th and am maintaining just fine! I will promise to never bash another person's surgery choice just because it's different than mine. I don't have enough knowledge since I am not living with the results. So, please Theresa you are constantly bashing the RNY/bypass choice. This person was not even asking opinions on the types of surgeries. Not only did her doctor make her feel like a failure, but your response could also because she "failed" to choose your preferred type. She needs SUPPORT with the surgery that she has already chosen. To the original poster... Please do look into getting examined by another surgeon to be sure that there is nothing mechanically wrong with your surgery. If the second doctor finds there is nothing wrong, then I would get back to the basics. Good luck to you !! (I am sorry if my reply appears harsh, I am usuallly not controversial) Shelley

I believe that your surgery was succesful and you did loose lots of weight. You dropped 121 Lbs. You are now gaining weight back because you are over eating. Lets explore why? Please read my response to you with an open heart and an open mind. I believe that you have some unresolve old emotional issues maybe from childhood that you need to eat to cover them up as a form of protection. If you think deep in your heart and try to find out what they are and do an effort to heal them and/or to deal with them, I believe the over eating and the obcession with food will take care of itself and things will get easier for you. Which mean you will not gain weight anymore and it will become easier to loose weight again.

Do not be discouraged by the fact that you are ONLY 229 lbs. I currently weigh 385 and am just now beginning down the path to a healthier life. I can only hope that one day I too will weigh 229. Hang in there!!
