Question:
When is it safe to go Skydiving?

Hello! I was wondering if anyone knows how long after surgery you need to wait before you can go sky diving? I am having revision surgery on 7/30 (I am getting a band above my RNY bypass). I asked my surgeon and at first he said 3 months, then he said 6 months, then he said to wait until next summer. So, I was just curious if anyone else has gone skydiving post-op and at what point they were able to do it? Thanks a bunch!!    — Binxalways (posted on July 17, 2008)

I went skydiving to celebrate my 4 year anniversary. See my pictures on my page. I recommend that you wait. I was sick for days after because of the pressure on my pouch. It was the most wonderful experience of my life, but I did have to pay for it physically afterwards.

You are just plum crazy! LOL Just teasing...I barely even enjoy getting into a perfectly good airplane, let alone jumping out of one. You sure don't want that band to slip...I heard those things can cause serious damage when they slip abruptly and skydiving seems like a good chance of that happening either from the pressure or the landing...Double trouble if you ask me...whose just going by logic and nothing else...You crazy girl! LOL I hope you wait...but have a blast when it's safer! (safer?) Yep...you are crazy!

You know, I have absolutely no idea. I applaud you for your decision for revision and to celebrate life by skydiving. Good for you!!! Sky's the limit!!! Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

LOL!! Thank you for your responses! I think my surgeon thought I was crazy too, that's why at first he said 3 months, then 6 months, and finally said Just wait until next summer!I never even considered the possibility of band slippage, so I am definitely going to look into that. My best friend & I were hoping to celebrate our 20 years of friendship by doing something memorable, and Skydiving would definitely be memorable!! HAHA Thanks again!! Sincerely, Elizabeth

I had asked my surgeon before surgery when I could go. The maximum weight for the skydiving was 225. I'm under that now, not by much, but he said once i hit the weight i could jump. I would say it's after you get below a certain weight. (plus i wanted a video of me jumping - when i was a little bit thinner)! I'm probably going in September. Have fun and good luck!

This totally made me laugh. Good for you, honey. But yeaaah, that might put some uncomfortable pressure on your band, and since you'd already BE so tender ... maybe give your body a full year to regulate all its new functions and become truly comfortable and strong before jumping out of planes, running with the bulls, etc.

ross went skydiving once he was below 250 lbs -- it was 1 yr and 1 week after his surgery -- actually he hit the 250 mark at xmas and it was his xmas gift -- but he didn't use it until may 28th -- but the PCP and surgeon never put a limit on what we could do and when -- when we felt good we did things -- good luck and have fun
