Question:
Are post-op RNY people able to take gel tablets etc?

Gel tablets, rapid release pills, etc. And if so, how long after surgery is this possible? cold season is upon us. Thanks in andvance for your answers.    — LaurieP (posted on December 10, 2007)

Hi. My surgeon told me I could take anything as long as it did NOT have aspirin in it. I have diabetes also so I can't take anything with sugar in it either. Good luck

I started taking rapid release tylenol at about 5 months out. I was also told NOTHING besides tylenol as advil and the other stuff might harm me and or my pouch. (Tylenol is all I've ever taken so this wasn't a problem to me).

Check with your surgeon's nurse, they may want you to crush it or slice it before taking it to make sure you're getting as much as possible for the relief you are looking for. There are varieties of Tylenol that comes in liquid form. Just remember no asprin or motrin. Good Luck, Leslie

Gel referring to gelatine capsules and soft gels will melt in saliva. If the content is oil, such as vit E or the like, you will probably not get the full benefit since we malabsorb fats/oils to a degree. I really like the rapid release, since I know it opens NOW and in water! The timed release stuff may not be so reliable either, since we may not get all the "releases". If you crush them, then they all release at once, which could potentially be an overdose.

I'm 6 months out RNY and I take gel tablets with no problems.
