Question:
will my hair grow back?

Help, I'm losing my hair! I knew it was coming but it's more traumatic than I thought it would be! I'm coming up to 4 mos. post op. and the Dr. says I'm doing fine with the diet etc. - but I would like to know how long it will keep falling out and when will it grow back??    — aliclaire (posted on August 29, 2009)

I am 16 months post op and lost some hair also. Keep your protein up and I took biotin..It won't stop the hair loss but the hair comes back will be thicker and more healthy...My hair took about 5-6 months before it stopped falling out. Other people may be different...But IT WILL COME BACK...Try not to worry, I know its hard...I had really long hair and I cut it short and it didn't look like as much fell out when it was short. I even kept my hair short as of today..Hang in there you will not go bald.

Everything the first post sd is correct...I'm 14 months out from RNY & 6 EDGS and lost my hair as well as the weight. I did keep up my vitamins and added the Biotin. Keep your protein up! My very straight hair is coming back with curl! You will be fine! Keep up the good work.

I'm almost 6 months post op, and I started to notice some hair loss beginning a month ago. I'd been taking biotin all along, and in the beginning, it even seemed to decrease the NORMAL hair loss I experienced every time I showered and washed my hair. But all of a sudden, there is a much bigger wad of hair stuck in the drain each time, so I have upped my biotin to 5 mg, and talked to my hairdresser, and she recommended the Nioxin hair products... says that most of her clients with noticably thinning hair get really good results. And, I understand the hair loss is not permanent, and that it does begin to grow back. But one of the women at my support group actually bought herself a wig because she was so self conscious. I don't know if they do it anymore, but used to be, you could find advertisements for really inexpensive wigs in the "True Romance"-type magazines. I bought several many years back, and no one knew they were wigs....

Don't worry, it will grow back!! I started losing my hair at about 5 months post-op and continued for about 4 more months. My MD said that Biotin isn't much help but did suggest supplemental Zinc. I bought a couple of wigs to get me through, but now at about 1 yr. out, it is growing back quite well. I must admit, the wigs were rather fun, especially the one that made me look like Meg Ryan (from the forehed up at least!). Good Luck

Yes it will grow back. My hair was also very curly the first four months after surgery. I was loosing a lot of weight durning that time. It gradually straighten out. My nutritionist told me to make sure I'm getting 70 grams of protein and try Zinc.Boitin did'nt seen to help. I read the hair loss is related to hormonal changes that happen during rapid weight loss. Hang in there.

Start using this shampoo called Nioxin. It doesn't help your hair grow back, but it makes your hair feel fuller and thicker, so it appears that you aren't losing hair. Use that until it stops, which it could be up to a year. I had my surgery 3.5 yrs ago and I liked the shampoo so much, I still use it. I have a lot of hair but it is fine. So you will notice along your hairline new hair growth and also under your hair by your neckline, new hair starting to grow. You won't go bald. You are growing new hair as it is falling out, but we don't see that, we only see the hair that is in the shower drain or in our brushes. Don't worry, it will stop. Just buy the shampoo Nioxin Scalp Treatment. You can find it at your local beauty supply store. Best wishes
