Question:
Open RNY?

I was told by my Dr. that he is going to be doing my RNY open he told me this was because he has lap patients that have came back with hernia's and he has had less complications with the open. Has anyone else had the open RNY and was recovery time the same as the LAP? Just curious?    — neecelee (posted on October 11, 2009)

Um, seriously, consider another surgeon. If he is basing his decision solely on his past experiences with complications of the lap RNY and not what is best for you, then find one who has a better track record. The lap should be the preferred way, not the other way around.

I agree with Joseph. That's a new one about the hernias and you may want to check this out with other people. I have never heard of the hernias being that common of a thing. Good luck

I agree. I've never heard of a surgeon doing open RNYs just because of hernias. The only time I've heard of it is when there is just too much fat around the liver for the surgeon to negotiate, or there is scarring problems from previous surgeries, or there is a pre-existing medical condition that requires an open RNY instead of the laparoscopic one. The healing time certainly is longer, the insult to the body is much more pronounced, and there is significantly more pain, requiring more medication and a longer hospital stay. Get a second opinion, if you can.

I don't know about the surgeon, but I had open RNY and had no problems was off pain meds next day and went home 1 day later than a lap patient would only because I had some low labs, not because I had open. Just make sure you check everything out and that your surgeon has a good track record.

I am almost 7 months post op from the open RNY and just just found out that I need a hernia operation. I agree with everyone find another surgeon.
