Question:
Has anyone had issues with a paralized stomach after Lap-Band?

I have a friend who had the lap band and recently had it deflted due to pregnancy, but now she is in the hospital and they say her stomach is paralized. Anyone ever hear of this before ?    — traly77 (posted on September 28, 2008)

Oh my gosh! That is scarey! Let us know what you find out and I will look into this as well! I plan to have a baby sometime in the near future and I would like to know the risks and complications of such an occurence as paralysis of the stomach. That can't be good! I'd hate to havee my band taken out but if that is what it comes down to so that I may finally have a child after 15 years of waiting then so be it!

I had the Gastric Bypass on a Tuesday and that Friday I was back in the hospital with paralyzed intestine. It is horrible, I was literally vomiting feces. The dr told me if I would not have vomited that my intestine would have probably burst. They gave me alot of fluids through the vein and I finally had a BM and OMG that was the best feeling ever. But yeah, I told my hubby I would rather weigh 400 lbs and never had this surgery at that time. But I am ok now and I am down to 130 lbs so I am very blessed and happy that I had the surgery.

OMG! I am getting the Realize lap band on the 23rd of October and am scared now! Please let us know if you hear of any answers from the outside like Cordelia asked. God Bless, Penny

Your friend probably has gastroparesis... it's a motility problem where the stomach doesn't grind up or squeeze food into the intestines like it should. It's not actual paralysis. The most common cause is damage to the vagus nerve. Damage can occur during surgery, from high blood sugar due to diabetes, viral illness, autoimmune, and for a lot of people, they don't know why it happens. Go to www.g-pact.org for more info. The paralyzed intestines Nellie mentioned is called "ileus" and can be caused by any type of abdominal surgery. Our intestines don't like being handled/manipulated and sometimes shut down temporarily after surgery.
