my open RNY scar is about six inches, but you can barely see it anymore. Everyone is definitely different though, it depends on how you scar.

I didn't have the open cut, I had laproscopic RNY.This is appoximately five smaller incisions. My advice to you is to start taking protein drinks prior to surgery. This aids in the healing process, particularly whatever scars you have. They help your muscles heal more rapidly. I did this per advice from my doctor and by george it worked! Best wishes for you. Good luck and god bless.

Hi Yvette! My scar is only two and a half inches long. I have no idea how my surgeon could do all that work through such a tiny opening, but he did! I'm two years out and 225 lb down, and my scar is now just a little white line. Even when it was new, the incision was only a red line. My surgeon uses glue rather than stitches or staples. So don't worry, you're probably not going to have the huge messy scar you were panicking about. Good luck!!!! -- Mary

Hi, Sounds like I got the big one. My scar is 10 1/2 inches long. It goes from my bottom of my breast bone to about 2 inches above the belly button. Mine may have been longer because I have an unbilical hernia and he wanted to check it out while he was in there, he also took out my gal bladder during the surgery. Mine is still pink, and I still have dots on both side from the staples. I had my surgery in November. So I am only 5 months post-op. Don't be scared, it's only a scar, your health is more important then a scar. No matter how big or little it is. Take care and God bless, Sheryl Open RNY 11/20/06 344-255-150.

Hello, I am 6 weeks out and my scar is healing good. My incision was only 4 inches. It is still red/pink but I am sure it will fade. I had my gallbladder out too. I am glad my surgeon didn't have to make such a huge incision.

I am 4 1/2 months post op and my scar originally was about 8" long and now is only about 5" long and visible but not too bad, and hey, It's not like I was going to wear a bikini before anyway! lol It will never bother me though, I wear my scar proudly because it reminds me every day of what I was and how I changed myself. Best of luck!

hello Yvette. We were told in classes we took that an open procedure would begin at the breastbone and go down as far as "they needed to". It could be six inches and it could be 18 inches depending on your size and how much they needed to opoen you up to perform the surgery. Your surgeon should have a good idea from their experience, but there are no guarantees since sometimes surprises happen in surgery. Take care, Patricia P.

I think it depends on the surgeon that does your rny. My friend and I went to the same place to have our open rnys done, however we had different surgeons. Her scar runs from breastbone to bellybutton. Mine is only about 4 1/2 inches long, just under the breastbone. I think the best way for you to find out would be to ask your surgeon. Good luck!

Have you considered LAP? The actual RNY is the same just the access is thru small incisions that literally disappear. Easier recovery less pain and best of all the risk of incisional hernia is near zero, opens get hernias about 1/3 of the time this from my surgeon dr schauer head of the ASBS.
