Question:
Does the lap band affect your singing voice?
I am a singer and I have noticed a change in my singing since I have been banded. My voice doesn't seem to be as strong as it was before. Has anyone heard of this before? — Yolanda P. (posted on June 26, 2007)

Yolanda, I had a similar surgery 24 years ago & was a soprano 1 soloist
with our alumni choir. The reason an ears, nose and throat specialist told
me was fromthe throwing up I did when I first had it done. You should make
an appointment with an ENT Doc and ask the group who specializes in vocal

You know, I had Lap rny and quite honestly I find my voice gets tired very
easily I just feel its a strain to talk sometimes

Hi Yolanda, thanks for your question. I have to fully agree with you that
your singing voice is affected for some post surgery. I sing for the Lord,
and love to sing for the Lord, but when I had surgery 3 1/2 years ago, I
have not been able to sing the same. It may be not enough hydration, I
suspect it had something to do with the surgical tube they put down your
throat, that it damaged some of the vocal chords. Truly I don't know, but
it did affect my voice, and even at 3 1/2 years out, it is still affected.
I hope you find a remedy, and let me know if you do, but work with it. And
honestly, I am still very glad I had surgery. I didn't want to sacrifice
my singing, and I still sing for The Lord in Church, but it is more

your lungs and diaphram do that work I don't know what your stomach would
have to do with it, see an ENT and maybe it is just worrying about it.

I thought I was nuts when this happened to me. Songs I sang in church
every week were no longer in the right key for me! I'm not sure how long
this lasted (I'm about 18 mos. post-op now), but my voice has been back to
normal for at least 6 mos.

since now I can'sing a lick, maybe it will be the opposite for me, maybe I
will be able to sing better after surgery. mmmmm brian

HA! Brian. You madcap. :)
I remember reading that Ann Wilson of Heart chose lapband specifically
because she did not want surgery to affect her awesome, awesome pipes.
Whether or not it worked, I never heard her say. (She was the Band
celebrity on the old Spotlight Health site).
I hope you find an answer and get back to singing. I admire all of you
with that talent.
