Question:
Are pain pills bad for the pouch?
I take an occasional pain pill for my hips when they are hurting real bad. Am I causing a lot of damage to my pouch? Does anybody have any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance. — Kristy (posted on September 4, 2007)

It all depends. As far as over the counter-- we are supposed to only take
Tylenol, NOT advil or anything else. If they are prescribed pain pills,
talk to your surgeon. Good luck and God Bless!

I agree it depends on what you are taking and if it has an antiinflamatory
in it. Ask your Dr. about a pain patch for the really bad times

To be more detailed... anti-inflamitory medication can cause bleeding and
ulcers. Tylenol is the only approved OTC medication for pain. Also, my
doctor suggested Celebrex, but that is a prescription medication. So,
becareful of what you are taking... and take care.

I doubt you are doing any damage to your pouch. Most narcotics are
mixtures... Vicodin is hydrocodone mixed with tylenol... Vicoprofin is
hydrocodone mixed with ibuprofen. I would avoid anything that contains an
anti-inflamatory (eg. ibuprofen, aleve, toradol).
Depending how much you take and how often, there are some GI side
effects... constipation, decreased appetite, and delayed gastric emptying
(food stays in the stomach for too long and can cause cramping, nasuea,
vomitting, pain and bloating).
This would be a great question to ask your surgeon or the doctor who
prescribes your medication.

NO pain pill do NOT hurt the pouch. However you do need to crush ALL pain
or any pills up. I take 6 diffrey pain meds
oxi,morphine,norco,dilaudid,soma and more, I have taked them for over 4
years ans the surgen would have no done the bypass if pain pills were a
problum. Hope I was help.
