Gerd is Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. "It occurs when acid contents of the stomach wash back up(reflux)into the esophagus(food tube)". "The source of the problem seems to be laxity in the muscle seperating the esophagus from the stomach which normally opens to allow food to pass into the stomach but otherwise remains tightly shut". This info. I got from the Harvard Guide to Women's Health. I had surgery in Aug. 2000 for Acid Reflux and GERD. THis is something that shouldn't be messed around with. I was under supervision and mine turned into Barretts Esophagus which is a precancerous condition of the esophagus. It's when the lining of the esophagus begins to change like that of the stomach. I also developed a Hiatal Hernia with mine. I am now monitored yearly for changes in the esophagus. I would urge anyone who experiences heartburn 2 or more times a week to have it checked out. This can become something very serious if left untreated. None of the medications helped me. Best of luck
