Question:
What exactly is dumping?

I had surgery on 1/14/09, and so far I haven't had any problems. I asked my doc. if it was normal not to have any problems and he stated I must be following the routine? But I am unsure what dumping is. I tried to eat ground beef and I was in the bathroom with diarea like symtoms(no pain). I have not eat ground beef again and probably won't. But since that 1 time nothing else bothered me. I lost 47lbs so far.    — jenwalton16 (posted on March 14, 2009)

yeah, ground meat was a no no for me. I think there is too much fat in it. I am out 2 years and have done well also. I have lost 285lbs so far and feeling great. I try not to do ground meat and if I do it is a extremely thin small burger. Can't tolerate meatloaf too dry and you not able to chew to the right consistency. the pain, or the diarrhea feeling from the ground meat is probably because beef don't digest well. I advise you not to do corn either. ONG the pain.... Good luck and keep up the good work.

Yes that was a dumping episode from the fat...You can dump from fat or sugar. Ground beef tends to be easier to chew that a steak...but the fat content is MUCH higher than a lean cut of beef. Fat usually has the diarreah and gas as it's dumping symptoms. Sugar and simple carbs can cause sweating, nausea, foamie (phlgem) mouth, gas, bloating, PAIN, sleepiness. I mostly dump from sugar if anything...but occasionally I will eat dinner and then eat a sweet fruit like an apple, grapes or cherries too soon after dinner and cause myself a painful episode...One such fruit is Cherries which do not like me at all if I over eat just ONE extra too many! And if I do not measure them out to a protion size...forget it! I'm a goner...So I measure out a serving suggestion according to the package and I KNOW that it is enough (even though my mouth and head want more)...However the first year should be much less until you are at maintenance where you've stopped losing and can handle a normal size portion. Til then you need to learn your limits as you go...Don't give up completely on beef or even ground beef...Just try a leaner package or drain the fat REALLY well! Dumping happens to those who have had much of their stomach removed which include all the acid producing parts...The food dumps quickly into the small bowels and causes the symptoms from sugar and fat. This will not happen in a person who has stomach acid and their small intestines...Sometimes this happens mildly to young babies who are not fully developed yet and start food too soon....and elderly who over time have little acid production left...(reason it is very common for elderly to take calcium citrate and B-12 injections!) Hope that helps
