Question:
Tried Something New subway atkins wrap

I just wanted to share that I tried the new Atkins Wrap at Subway and they are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! Two to chose from, Chicken Bacon Wrap or Turkey Bacon Wrap. They are very low carbs which are Great for us. I could only eat half of the wrap and felt full. The price in New Mexico is $3.99, but I had two meals, not to bad. 345/264/155 OPEN RNY 8/22/03 — ANN P. (posted on January 8, 2004)

Stop focusing on just the lo-carbs. This type of stuff is what drives my nutritionist (and probably other nutritionists) crazy. These wraps have a ton of calories - over half of them from FAT - when the guidelines recommend that less than 1/3 of your caloric intake come from fat.
Both of these wraps have 25-27g of fat, 9g of which is saturated fat - this is the worst kind of fat that you can have.
If you want to eat Subway sandwiches, believe me, you would be much better off ordering one of their "6 or under" sandwiches and discarding all or some of the bread...JR

Oh...and a couple of more points to make. These things are low in the "net or impact" carbs, but they do have 19 (chicken) and 22 (turkey) grames of carbs in them. Yes, there is 11 and 12 g of dietary fiber, but you know what??? Fiber, impact carbs, non-impact carbs - all have the same 4 calories per gram - fiber is not calorie-free. And fat??? It carries a whopping 9 calories per gram.
You could get a 6" Turkey Breast and Ham - 290 calories total and only 45 from fat. And you'll lose a lot of those calories if you discard some or all of the bread (46g of carbs)...JR

Well said John. We have so many things to worry about- not just carbs. Balance is always best.

I think you are both right balance is best, but I think sometimes people go off on people posting about what they should eat and what they shouldn't and that is wrong. I mean none of us know what these people eat from day to day, they could have had half a subway wrap in the last year so I think we shouldn't judge them. I say we just all inform each other and encourage everyone to do their best! GOOD LUCK ALL!

Denise - this is true, but I'm also trying to make the point that just because something is low carb, doesn't mean that it is healthy. A stick of butter has 0 carbs, but it is most decidedly unhealthy for you (810 calories, 91g of fat, 57g of saturated fat). I'm just seeing a lot of people post here and on other sites about these new Subway wraps and people have to look at the nutritional information - all of it - and not fall prey to advertising gimmicks...JR

Kinda like the same gimmick that Kentucky Fried Chicken did!

John, if your following an Atkins type of diet, which I think if what Subway is advertising to try to attract, Atkins doesn't care how much fat you consume. In fact, most of their foods, while high in protein are also high in fat. Yet their medical claims are that it is a "healthier" diet. Thanks for pointing out the fat grams though. I was tempted to try one, but think I'll stick to my 6 inch ham and cheese sub.

Cindy - no...I tried and gave up the Atkins diet back in the mid-70's when I was 18. I know that there are Atkins advocates amongst the WLS posties, but my nutritionist doesn't agree with the Atkins concepts. She advocates a more balanced diet (if you have to follow a structured diet) and think that the South Beach Diet is much better in the long-run for people...JR

big giant sigh.... If atkins worked all that well I wouldn't have needed surgery to lose all this weight... I do moderation on my carbs and try to stick to geting them from fresh fruits and veggies. I also moderate my fat intake, try to get that fom "healthier sources too, salmon, olive oil etc.

John, I totally agree with you there I already said a balanced diet is best..:) I just know what happens on here when people post topics like this, everyone seems to jump on them, not meaning you were John. I know you were just making a point.

As a calorie counter I'm thrilled with all of the low carb. choices out there....a lot of the new low carb stuff is also lower in calories...so woooohoooo to all the Atkins (and in the name of Atkins) stuff out there....Don Pablos has a low carb fajita dinner that is about 500 calories (for the entire meal) vs. the regular version for about 2X that in calories....Atkins crunchers are da bomb at 100 calories each bag...I have reactive hypoglycemia (since surgery) so the lower sugar content of these products doesn't wreak havoc with my sugar levels. To eat low carb as a way of life for me is way too gross...but to incorporate some of these products into my low cal, low fat regime works great for me. So Subway here I come (I already get their low cal version of stuff...so now I'll just ask for it with the lower carb wrap...very cool) Thanks for the info. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 282/140/125 (I'll be a hundred and two before I get to that weight)

the calories in fiber are in fact absorbed. The reason atkins uses net carbs is that the non impact carbs, ie. fiber do not affect your blood sugar/insulin levels.
