Question:
Should I get a scope?

I am almost 4 years post op. I have been having problems with constipation for the past few weeks. It worries me because it just kinda started all of the sudden. I never really feel "emptied out" and my upper abdomen fells a little bloated, no pain though. I went to my Dr., and he said to take Colace, but I seamed fine to him. He said if I'm worried about it, I could have a scope done if I wanted to. I am still the same after taking Colace. It makes me wonder if I could have a partial bowel blockage or something? Should I get a scope done? I'm scared of getting a scope because of all the complications I had from the initial surgery. Any Ideas? Also, about what is the cost of a scope? Thanks.    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on October 28, 2005)

I am haveing my WLS on Tuesday, so I can not give you a answer on that. But I can tell you I had the Scope last week a it was a peace of Cake no pun intended. My insurance covered mine as it was not linked with weight loss. I had been having stomach problems. Do you stll have your GB or did they take it out? Will keep you in our prayers. Good Luck Elaine

I do still have my gall bladder. I havn't had any pain, so I didn't think it could be gall bladder problems.

How is your fiber intake?Water?Have you started taking any new vitamins/iron/calcium or an improved product? Sometimes formulas are changed and they will cause constipation. If all of those things are ok then definitely get the scope. The reason I suggested the above is because if there is no problem (scope wise) those will be the things to check first otherwise you are worrying about the scope for nothing.

I've had three scopes...they are nothing, don't worry about it. As for how you feel, I've felt the same thing off and on for a year or so. My doctors don't seem concerned either, and I haven't had any major issues with it. Good luck.

Check your insurance policy. It's for a medical reason and it shouldn't cost you any more that just a co-pay. The cost of peace of mind -- you can't put a price on it. Continue worry will only cost more -- anxiety, ulcers - and other stuff.

Concerning the scope... I was terrified! I went through many tests drinking the most vile chalkie "bleeping" stuff you can imagine, xrays, MRI's... ect for the stomach pain I had last year. I ended up having the scope anyway. :( Now I'm sorry I just did'nt have that in the first place! They gave me something in my IV... I said a few words to the doctor... and then I woke up. I don't remember going to sleep or anything else. I've been through alot of medical proceedures in my life. I'm still amazed that that "feared scope" was one, if not, the easiest thing. If the scope is what is needed to find out your problem... DO IT! Don't wait until you are in a major health crisis. Good luck. :)

I had a terrible problem with constipation/ impaction after my surgery. The best thing is to take you Colace every day (take two if it is not working) and also make sure you get enough fiber. I sprinkle flax seed on my morning yogurt, and eat lettuce and veggies every day. I also found that having some fat helped lubricate my stools, so you should have a handful of almonds every day.

Hi, I was having some problems also, my husband is taking fish oil capsules for heart health. I begin taking them also several a day. I have never been so regular! Try itbefore the scope , it will not hurt. I've had one of those before my gallbadder was removed a year after my wls. and it is not bad the feeling of embarrassment are what is the worst. They sedate you so you don''t even know what's going on, you wake up and it's over. Please do something though consipation can lead to full blockage and thats not good!!! Rebecca
