Question:
question about stomach pain

hi I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the type of pain I am, I will be 3 years post op in jan from open rny without transection, in the last month I have been having a pain in my stomach so bad sometimes its hard to walk and breathe, I moved from MN to FL so I cant see my surgeon anymore I have seen 3 DRs and had 2 cat scans and they cant find anything, the pain is excruciating and is irritated more by any carbonated drinks and sometimes food, They have to give me percocet for the pain cause NOTHING else helps, I recently changed jobs and have to wait a few more weeks to get new insurance at that time I will schedule an appt to see a gastrologist to have that scope procedure in the meantime I was curious if anyone had any idea what is going on!    — christineneale (posted on December 11, 2005)

I went through this alot. I've had many tests (xrays) and nothing was found wrong. One doctor "thought" it might be esphophical spasms. Whatever it was, it "usually" happened as soon as I laid down for the night. It would feel as if someone was twisting my stomach. Litterly. Anyway, I can feel it coming on. And if I have a Nexium ready to take, "usually" it will stop the pain. If not, I'm in excrusating pain for 3-5 hours. One other thing I notice is to lay off drinking to much coffee and drink more water. Just a thought.

I had pain like this thought I was going to die, was worse than recovering from the surgery. It turned out mine was that my gas medicine (previcid?? cant remember name) was not strong enough once they upped that the pain went away. Might want to check that out it is worth a check. Good luck, Kim

Just a thought, could it be a hernia, apperantly a strangled hernia can be very painful. Best wishes, Phyllis

I recently was going thru something similar.. Had an upper GI along with the endoscopy to look into my stomach.. My pain was not only ulcer related but hernia related too. May want to have a doc do an endoscopy to look inside your pouch.

mine are esophageal spasms. When they hit, they hit hard. There is no rhyme or reason to it when they happen. The doc did say that it is worse when you are under stress. I take just a 2 mg pill of valium as a "muscle relaxer" as needed. I don't take it everyday, only when I feel those spasms coming on. It was not found by cat scan, endoscope or anything else. I had so many tests done. They just concluded it was esophageal spasms.

Hi Christine. I also am three years post-op and have experienced similar pain --- it is, as you described - excruciating. My pain would usually come on if I consumed any kind of cereal or very greasy food. The past two episodes (as I describe them) caused me to have severe asthma attacks --- causing my husband to call 911! Anyway, to cut the story telling down, my doctor diagnosed it as IBS and prescribed Zeldorm and Nexium. I can only describe the Zeldorm as a wonder drug. . .I have never felt better! My stomach no longer has that gasey feeling or bloating and my bathroom habits have improved greatly. I hope you can get this problem resolved quickly --- I would suggest discussing a possible trial on Zeldorm --- it really worked well for me. Lori Ann

First off, you need to find a BTC surgeon in Florida. I have been 4 yrs out and suffer these pains and they told me that it is gas. Too much fiber and sugar free foods will cause this pain. I also get these pains after surgery. So even on a empty stomach I get gas pains! But check with a BTC Clinic before you do anything else.

No one else has addressed this, so I guess I'll be the "mean" one. You say carbonated drinks makes it worse....don't drink carbonated drinks!! That is considered an absolute no-no by many WLS surgeons. Have you noticed if it's spicy food that causes the pain or does that seem to matter? Do you have an ulcer? Pain like you are describing could be from an ulcer. It could also be gas. I've had a few spells where I literally thought I was going to die....and it was only gas. It lasted for over a week once. Take maalox and gas x and see if that will help a little....take it like every 4 hours for a few days. You need to keep complaining until you find a doc that will help you because this kind of pain is NOT normal. When your new insurance kicks in....do what you need to in order to figure it out. Carmen

When I had pain like that, it turned out to be my uterus, which I had to have out.

Hi, Its Christine I just wanted to thank you all for the help, I didnt mention it before but I did try every gas medication possible and none worked lol, per my pcp I have only ever took tylenol and not aspirin coz she said aspirin was bad, but I decided to try some ibuprofen and found that it relieves the pain enough for me to function, granted Im taking way too many a day but like I said before I have to wait for my new medical insurance to start before I can see a dr again hopefully for a endoscopy!

My first thought is esophageal spasms. I had them about 3 years post-op. They were exacerbated by stress around the time my father died. The pain sounds similar. Good luck!
