Question:
Anesthesiologist

The hospital just called me and told me I had to make an appointment to meet with the anesthesiologist before surgery. Has anyone else had to do this? What is the purpose of the appoinment, I would think everyone knows my doctors, my meds, and my allergies already!    — jtaormina (posted on February 17, 2009)

Yes, I had to meet with the anesthesiologist before surgery and incurred a $400 consultation bill. They had me meet with him when I did the Pre-Admin stuff.

Yes, no worries, it's part of the procedure. The anesthesiologist talks about his role in the surgery and the risks and so on and so forth.

This is a very importan appointment, this is the person that is incontrol of you going to sleep during the operation he or she needs to know what meds u take so they can monitor u while u are out, I bet everyone of us had to do this. The anathesiolagist and the other docs work together . Relax go in and you will learn what they are going to do, they will explain exactly what they will do while u are out. They have the final say prior to surgery my gf is looking into lapband she had a date the anathesiolagist cancelled cause she has hypertension of the heart, they postone the surgery until they do more testing she goes in for her 4 month chk in march and they will say yae or nae and she was just told if she still wants the surgery she will have to tell them to do it no matter what happens, so be blessed and enjoy the journey

yes I had to do it too. It was costly but had a purpose. He talked about risks and the complications that being overweight and put to sleep cause. He also talked about the possibility that he would have to put in an "A line" which was artierial IV and stitching it in and such. It limited the surprizes that you will have on surgery morning when you are already nervous enough. Go and don't worry. Good luck to you.

As others have noted, anesthetists normally always meet with patients at least a day ahead of surgery to go over the whole procedure related to anesthesia, what type, and so on - all totally normal. Cheers.

This is very normal and in fact I would question not getting to meet with them. You'll get a lot of good insight about being anesthetized from him/her and it should help to put your mind at ease--at least it did for me.
