Question:
does going to the gym slow your weight loss ?

I was 220 yesterday and I went to the gym, and this morning I weighted myself and I'm up 1 lbs is this normal? How much protein is one supposed to have in a days time. I don't think I'm eating enough protein.    — mpreap (posted on March 20, 2009)

Yes I think so I believe we form and make muscles so when starting the gym i believe even gaining a couple of pounds is norm.don't let that scare u, it will come off in inches. Protein u should be getting 70 actually for more of a higher protein count if u are out a bit u should be getting 100 a day this is hard I know but we need to keep our muscles and if we do not later on down the road we will loose are muscles are bodys will start to deteriate the muscle, i think I explained that right Try not to weigh every day that will be so hard on u not to see the scale go down u need to remember the inches melt away also so it may show that way I took my scale to a friends house and weigh when i go over their if u have other question u can ask me Best of luck Tammi

You may be gaining muscle, but I have been working out and haven't gained any weight. Remember that there is water weight in there, also, and that can account for a lot. When I went to my doc appt last time and they weighed me, I had lost 12 pounds that month. The great thing was that I had gained 14 pounds of muscle, and the scale still showed 12 pounds lost. Muscle burns fat, so you want to build up your muscle. Plus as you build muscle, you are toning and it will help with any sagging skin. Don't be afraid to exercise, but make sure you are drinking plenty of water. My doc says at least 60 grams of protein, so I shoot for that every day. Also, don't starve yourself - you don't want your body to go into "starvation mode" where it hangs onto every calorie it gets. Just keep up the great work!

It is very unusual to gain weight from going to the gym. It takes the average person a MONTH or more to even gain ONE pound of muscle from weight training so that is HIGHLY unlkely as suggested by others...and you didn't even say if you were even weight training or just doing cardio...A work out usually burns about 300 calories...and if you are not eating but 600-800 calories you are putting your body into serious starvation mode...by cutting the 600-800 to 300-500 cals a day....YOU have to eat to work out...Before and after...If you go to the gym early try to have a protein drink before...and eat breakfast after or a small fruit before and lunch after...On the other side of the spectrum, you could be eating more than you thought and over eating the average 300 calories you burned during your work out...Only guessing from what you said in your question, "I don't think I am eating enough protein"....pretty much makes me believe you are NOT eating enough...If you want to see results from work outs, you have to eat and feed those muscles! Good luck!

One reason you may have gained a pound is while at the gym you maky have drank more water or fluids. I suffer from Conjestive Heart Failure and my weight has changed by 2 or 3 pounds in a days time. Water weight gain is not uncommon. So I would not really worry about it unless you continue to gain.

1st, I wouldn't weigh day to day. I can fluctuate up and down day to day depending on if I have gone to the bathroom, how much fluid I have taken in and am holding, if I hae eaten more one day than the other. Weigh once a week. You should be getting 60-80 grams of protein a day depending on who your nutritionist is.
