Question:
coronary artery disease

Does anyone have stents put in their heart and are on plavix? Do any of you have to go off of your plavix for surgery?    — cuppaloopy (posted on October 3, 2009)

I have 5 stents, and a history of triple bypass surgery, congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation. However I was not taking Plavix when I had surgery. I was on Coumadin. That was discontinued before surgery, and I was on Lovenox injections for a while. A year later, I have lost 110 pounds, and I think the surgery was literally a life saver. What I would recommend is that you make sure your surgeon and you cardiologist have a plan that they both feel comfortable with. Each will be focused on their own area of expertise, and it is so important to you that they work together. Be sure to discuss this with both of them, and that you can feel assured that they are on the same page.

I had a heart attack Feb, 2004. Have one stent and have been on Plavix since March, 2004. I had the VSG on 7/31/09. My cardiologist took me off of Plavix for 1 week prior to surgery, and for 2 weeks post op. She wasn't worried about me going through the weight loss surgery. In fact, she recommended it 2 years prior to my deciding to have it. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. No regrets!! Good luck.
