Question:
Diet before surgery

Hello, I am have surgery on the 10th of June just a week away. My question is my Dr. has told me to start my liquid diet just two days before my surgery and nothing after midnight the day before. But as I read mostly eveyone has started there diet weeks before. Could this be right?    — jammx4 (posted on June 4, 2010)

My doctor told me the exact same thing. Different doctors do different things. No worries.

Yes the doctor is always right. I did a liquid diet of skim milk and protein powder for 5 days then went to clear liquids for two and then nothing by mouth midnight the night before. The point of the diet is to shrink the liver so it is out of the surgions way and he/she won't accidently nick it when preforming your surgery. If he felt that your liver was not in jeperody then you will be fine. Good luck. Why go through hell week if you don't have too.

No worries! Some MD's don't require a liquid diet pre-op at all and some require several weeks! So listen to your surgeon and good luck!

Well, Im having my surgery July 7th. My doctor told me June 8th he wanted me on a high protein diet to reduce the size of my liver. If I don't comply I could end up w/ scares and no surgery cause the liver is still fat or listen and have better results. I chose to listen, I've never performed a surgery before! Good luck, it is difficult!
