Question:
How long does it take for your hair to grow back in.

I haven't had surgery yet, but I have lost lots of my hair. I was told by many that it was caused by diabetes and that their hair came back in after surgery. I am on hormones and synthroid to help it come back in, but it isn't yet. I know I'll lose more when I have my wls.    — geneswife (posted on March 2, 2006)

Hello Billie, I can not comment as to how long it will take your hair to stabilize from the diabetes however I did want to advise you that not everyone loses their hair post-op. My hair actually grew very fast post-op. Have you posed this question to your surgeon?

Hey Billie, I did not lose any hair, and I am a 1yr and 3 months out. A lot of people don't ever lose there hair. it really depends on your body. If you are a women, I know there are some hair stylists that make special shampoos that they add chemicals to prevent hair loss.

I lost hair after my RNY and my TT. Hair and Nail vitamins seem to help more than anything. My hair was very straight but came back in curly and frizzy but is still quite thin. But then so am I!

Prior to surgery I had this great, thick, straight hair. Today, at 4.5 months post op I have been pulling just tons and tons of hair out when I brush it, when I wash it - anything. It's gotten so thin depite the fact that I'm drinking over a gallon of water a day, taking hair and nail vitamins and getting in my required amount of protein and then some. Your body will need extra protein to feed your hair as hair is a luxury and your vital organs need the protein first. It's different for everyone, but I heard that it's somewhere around the 9 month mark that hair starts to grow back in.
