Question:
Has there been any Husbands and wives that have done the WLS at teh same time?

Hubby and I are both in need of the WLS and the only Dr that is covered by the ins is 4 hrs away. We were hoping to go through this together and get it done at the same time. We would have the help of my parents to drive and take care of our son during the ordeal and after. Has anyone else done this together???    — Pookie B. (posted on November 4, 2002)

Well, definately not husband and wife LOL, but me and my mom are having surgery a week apart in December. I'm 22 and still have close contact with my parents since I'm still in school.

Yes. My husband and I both had laproscopic bypass surgery approx. five weeks ago. We had surgery on the same day and were able to be in the same room for recovery. We are glad we did .It has been great in the sense that we know exactly what the other is feeling when we talk about our eating habits, how we are feeling in general. After surgery your hoemones go wacky and your more stressed. We both feel even closer now having gone through this together. Good-luck to you both!

My SO and I did it three weeks apart. I did it and then while I was still on disability but feeling better she did hers and I could help her. It worked out great that way. But boy howdy 4 hours is a long drive. I don't think with three children we could have done it at the same time but not having children we definitely could have. Not easily but we could have. Good Luck

We seperated our surgeries, me July Jen December. This way we were better able to support ourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally. Your lucky we dont have much close by family for help. Good wishes on your adventure. Thats how we looked at it after it was over. Before surgery we were both scared stiff:(

I am one month post-op (-34#, open RNY) and couldn't imaging not having my husband to help me for that first week. If one of you has a complication and has to go back in the hospital, who can the other spouse rely on to help? I acted like a "trooper" and did everything I was told to do by the surgeon (walk 10x/day, 500 breathing exercises per day) but it really helps to have someone there to take care of you. Maybe you can space your surgeries a month apart? I strongly suggest this just from my experience. Best wishes to you both!

My husband and I had the surgery together. The good thing is only going to every drs. appointment once. But we did not have children to take care of, our children took care of us.

Pookie, Laurie Wenger here. My husband, Ron and I had both our surgeries the same day! 1-17-02. He went in at noon and then after he was done I got to go. Neither one of us regret our decision at all. He's lost 95# and I have 81.5#. We've come along ways from where we started from and, as I stated have NO REGRETS! You can look us up in the "meet your peers" section and see where we got it done at. Would love to email you and keep in contact. Is there a support group near you? We strongly suggest going to one. Meeting others that have come this way makes the journey a little easier. We had a great support system of family to give us help when needed but we mostly took care of each other. The hospital was 2 hrs. away and family drove us there and back so we did alright. Alot of them wondered how we would ever get through it being all cooped up in the house together for 4 weeks figuring we'd be at each others throats but we just laughed at them and felt we were in great company! Good luck and God Bless you both in your decision.
