Question:
Should I perm prior to surgery?

My hair stylist suggested a body wave when I told her that I was having WLS at the end of the month. She says that it will add body which will help cover up hair loss. (Her mom and sister have both had WLS) I don't normally have my hair permed and am not sure whether or not this is a good idea. Has anyone else had a perm or body wave prior to surgery for this reason?    — Lydia S. (posted on January 6, 2003)

I have gotten perms regularly for many years. Mine only last about 3 months and hair loss doesn't usually take place until about 4 months out. If you don't normally get your hair permed, I wouldn't do it now. I lost a bunch of hair and just had it cut really short. It's starting to come back now, but I probably won't have enough to perm for sevral months yet.

Depending on how long your hair is and how long a perm lasts for you, it may be a moot point. My perms last less than 3 months and I have short hair, and the hair doesn't start falling out until month 3, so a perm would not have worked for me. Best advice for when the hair does start falling out is to get a short cute doo. I did and got more compliments....surprised me as it was pretty short and I was used to having my hair a little longer...

My two cents, unless you are a regular permer (my own word), DO NOT DO IT. Your hair will be much more healthier with out it. Whether you lose hair or not. Plus once you start you'll have to either keep perming it or wait for it to grow out/cut it out, which can be a long process. Plus, on a fashion note, perms/body waves are sooooo 80's!!! Best of luck to you...peace aims
