Question:
I can't find a primary care doctor can anyone help?

I am 32 years old and have been battling my weight most of my life. My primary doc told me three months ago she would approve the surgery, just talked to her 3 days ago and she told me I would not be a good candidate due to hypothryroid. My levels have been normal for over a year and everyone I have talked to tells me that does not make me a bad candidate. I am 5'2" weigh 270 pounds and have hypothyroid, hypertension, sleep apnea, depression, shortness of breath, joint and back pain. I am looking for a new doctor in the Kenosha Racine area that is not against this surgery. Does anyone have any suggestions?    — Nancy S. (posted on March 8, 2003)

Cal some local surgeons and ask for some supportive PCP names or attend some local support group meetings. Many are sponsored by a suyrgeon and you can ask about your problem.

Ask her to refer you to a WLS surgeon as you would like a 2nd opinion. If the surgeon feels you are a good candidate then let him or her submit for approval. Many insurances do not require that your primary be the one who submits for the approval. Good Luck!

Hi Nancy, If you prefer not to change you PCP, ask her for referral for a consultion with an Endocrinologist. When I had finally made my decision to go for WLS. It was discovered I had developed hypothyroidism. My Endocrinologist prescribed Levoyxl and it took about a year for thyroid to level off. Once my thyroid leveled off he okayed me for my surgery. Does your Health Insurance Provider allow for second opinions?

This is the whole problem. My levels have been normal for over a year. I have been on levoxyl and take it daily. My doctor and I just don't see eye to eye on this. I will have to call my insurance about second opinions. Thanks

When I was waiting for insurance approval, they told me I had to have a thyroid test (TSH) done before approval. I did have one done 14 monts proir and was normal. this one showed I was hypothyroid. My Dr. put me on Levoxyl, did a repeat test 1 month later, this brought my TSH to the normal range, The insurance approved then I was scheduled for surgery. Your Doctor needs to be educated
