Question:
Back Pain

I suffer from arthritis and bone spurs in my back. Today was a hard day because it is cold and rainy in Columbus Ohio and I cannot take my back meds due to pre-op restrictions. I went to work late and left early due to pain. Tylenol products do not help! Does anyone have any suggestions?    — Natalie C. (posted on April 7, 2003)

How about finding a hot tub possibly at your local ymca? I use mine frequently, and although it doesn't take away pain, it takes the edge off of it. Also, you could look into something called Reiki massage. It's an 'energy' massage, not deep muscle, and prior to my neck surgery for herniated disks, it was the only thing that gave me any type of relief. It is not easy to find a Reiki Master, but look into "New Age" bookstores and the like, often they have business cards posted. May sound nuts, but when I was at my wits end, I was willing to try anything!!! Best of luck to you. Robin

Natalie, do you ever see a chiropractor? They have electric stimulation machines that may help. Or they can do massages as well. Or find a massage therapist and get one done- that could help alot and will also relax you. Feel better!

I found an accupunture Doctor in my area and got treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. It was an immeadiate improvement that lasted about a month. My insurance is CIGNA HMO and they have a provision for a co-payment (about 1/2 the cost)and I am aware that alot of other insurers carry the same provision. The treatment was painless.

I agree with the chiropractor and the massage and the hot tub. I do all three now pre op and post op. I have arthritis of the hip and sciatica pain that shoots down the leg and I do get relief from hot baths or my hot tub. Also the chiropractor has helped in lenghtening the muscles from being so stiff. I also go to swim therapy 3x a week to stregthen muscles and keep them stretched. I was on anti-inflamatories and narcotic pain meds and now 2 months post op it is managable without any medication. SO THERE IS HOPE. HANG IN. HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT TOO LONG BEFORE SURGERY.
