Question:
Is my pouch leaking into my old stomach???

I am just 1 week post op. I have a pobia of my pouch after reading several posts before surgery. I am drinking about 24 oz of water a day. I was a pretty big drinker before. It is hard not to gulp. I eat only roughly 4 meals a day at 1 1/2 to 2 oz. I do not feel full nor hungry. I discussed it with my doc's RN. She said I am fine. Well this evening. I have had gas ta boot. I feel hungry all the sudden. I just ate my snack. Is it leaking in to my old and making me hungry???? What could have I done??? Should I feel any other simptoms??? I don't. Please help me. Is there a test the doc can do???    — cookiedough (posted on December 1, 2003)

i read your profile and it doesn't say what kind of surgery you had..only that you had open surgery. i had open RNY transected. if your stomach was transcented(cut apart)then you can't be leaking into your old stomach. it take about 2 months for your new stomach to function after you have surgery. i didn't even get a full feeling or hungry untill about 2 1/2 months post-op. i also got gas alot the first 2 months. i took chewable sugarfree gas-x and it took care of that.

I agree with Fran. You sound pretty normal to me. You're not eating much or drinking much (do try to up the water or you risk dehydration). It takes awhile for you to feel hungry, and to learn what full feels like again. Relax and give it time. Sometimes you will feel hungry, and feel like you can eat more, but 1 1/2 to 2 ounces is nearly nothing. Your doctor can do a scope to check for a staple line disruption (if you were not transected), but I think it's highly unlikely that you have one.
