Question:
Have others gotten to within a few days of surgery then bam,,canceled ?

This morning I had a date now.....no date. No explaination. Just a message saying that they would call me back with a new date as soon as they can reschedule me.    — blockie (posted on June 6, 2003)

I am going through the UCSF program and that is their standard MO - in their case unfortunately other emergencies come up and RNY patinets have the lowest priority. It is frustrating because you have to plan a lot in your personal life to go through the surgery - not to mention the mental preparation - and then have the rug pulled out from under you. Hopefully you will have a new date soon. I would think at least they would have told you why. That wasn't very courteous - but doctor's offices often aren't thinking of impacts to patients. HUGS - wishing you strength while you wait!

My surgery was scheduled for June 5th, I had everything ready (including reasuring my 9 year old son that mommy would be fine) and 1 hour before I left for the hospital the nurse called to let me know the Dr. was sick and I had to reschedule for the 9th. Oh how disappointing that was, but I would rather have a healthy surgeon than a sick one working on me. So now I'm getting ready again for Monday morning, I hope she's feeling better!

2 weeks before my scheduled date, my surgeons office called to tell me that they had to postpone my surgery another 2 weeks. the anesthesiologist my surgeon wanted to use for me was not going to be available that day, so they agreed on a date when they would both MAKE themselves be available. very disappointing, but, in the long run i was much better off. i was the only surgery both of them scheduled for the new date & i was treated like a queen & had their undivided attention ALL day. whats meant to be will be hun. good luck & let us know when your new date will be.

I know it is disappointing to be cancelled and rescheduled. I work wih a woman whose surgeon is also the head of the renal (kidney) transplant division at a majot teaching hospital. She was cancelled and rescheduled 3 times! Just keep in mind that someone who desparately needed your time slot probably got it . Elective surgeries are the ones to be rescheduled when the surgery schedule needs to be juggled. It might be due to staffing, too. OR nurses like to have time off, too, and hospitals sometimes have to close down the number of rooms they can use if there aren't enough nurses. (The hospital where I work sometimes has to have the ER go on diversion (send patients elsewhere) if there aren't enough nurses to take care of number of patients already in the hospital.) Good luck on getting a new date SOON!

Well i was scheduled for surgery wed June 11th.they called me on the 3rd to tell me a different date of July 3rd, i was so upset i can't tell you. The change was to be in a different hospital which is closer to me but that still was no consolation, but anyways i am down to counting the days again, what a bummer..Dorothy Gillette/Upstate NY

I was originally scheduled to have my surgery on April 22 and got a call on April 11th (my 50th Birthday) that my surgeon had decided not to do the procedure anymore. I was devastated and felt justified of course because it was my birthday!!! I then had to start the process over again except for the psych evaluation. I'm thinking of this as a blessing in disguise. The new surgeon ordered a sleep study done and I have severe sleep apnea. I'm now using a cpap machine and my new surgery date is July 29th. I can't wait until then. Good luck to you! Peace. Gail
