Question:
What do you do with your rings?

I have lost 50 pounds and I am not a big jewlery person, but I do wear my wedding ring 24/7. Problem is my finger has gotten smaller. Lastnight when I was in swim class (water aerobics) I thought it was going to come off. I still have at least 100 pounds more to go so resizing isn't an option yet. So how can I make it more snug to my finger without resizing. Also it is a thick band since it is 2 rings soddered together.    — Heather M. (posted on August 13, 2003)

It may not be the best looking option, but you can buy sizer rings to put inside your current ring to make it smaller. These are relatively inexpensive but keep the ring from being lost in the interim where you continue to lose weight. A lot of girls do this when wearing their boyfriends class ring in high school. Also, for them yarn wrapped around the lower side of the ring is an option, but you may not want that on your wedding ring.

I'm down 85 pounds and I will be bringing my rings to have resized, due to the fact I will loose them too! Think about resizing, since we're only talking a few dollars ($10) where I live. A small price to pay for the security. I could spend $10 in no time buying junk food 6 months ago. I guess you could always wrap tape of some kind around it (surgical), if you didn't want to spend $$$$. Good Luck! (lap) 2/11/03~~~~ -85 pounds!

Go to a jeweler, they can put something (not permanent) on the ring that makes it more snug on your finger until you are ready to have it resized.

Hi, I wanted to share my solution: You can buy very inexpensive plastic ring "snuggies" (I think that is the actual name for them) at places like Meijer, Claire's Boutiques, and I think even Walmart carries them; Kohl's has them as well. They are clear plastic tubes that have been cut so that they will wrap around the rings; they come in different sizes so they will fit either a small or a wide shank ring. They take a little bit to get used to, but I'm allergic to the metal ones that the jewelers use. Congratulations on your weight loss!

For the rings that are invaluable to me (sentimental) I paid $20 to have them resized.....they were also thick band rings and they look perfect!...go to a reputable jeweler. In 9 1/2 months my ring size went down 2 sizes, but I had to have it done before I hit goal....they were falling off when I washed my hands

I can't believe no one has put what I think is the most obvious solution. I have just continued to move my two favorite rings, up my fingers, then onto my thumbs. By that time I will be at goal, or pretty darn close, and get them resized perfect once and for all. I get a kick out of holding up my hand to my honey, and telling him "I'm a free agent babe!" he laughs because my wedding ring has moved 2 fingers to my left!!! He loves it because he reaps all the benefits of my being thinner and a ring is only a symbol and at least I'm still wearing it. At 100 lbs lost I got my tongue pierced!!! I'm 33 years old!! Wow talk about a crash diet, try a swollen tongue for you to not want to eat anything!!! hahahahaha My honey thinks that piece of jewlery is a blast!! It may not stay, but no matter how much I lose, it will still fit!!!

I would definitely not resize my expensive rings (my diamond engagement ring and wedding band specifically) more than once. Each time they are resized the strength of the metal is compromised (unless the rings are totally melted down and remade instead of just resized). My jeweler insisted that I wear the clear plastic add-ons until I was certain about what size I needed for this reason. I beleived his reasoning...especially because he could have made money off me by charging me to resize them at least a couple of times.

Hi, they make a clear colored soft plastic guard that you can put on the ring until such time that you want them resized at goal. They make them in a few different sizes. I have used them on my good jewelery as well as my cosume jewlery. I purchased them at walmart.

I could not bear to stop wearing my wedding band and because of the pattern on it, I could not resize it. What I have done is I bought a new smaller sized ring engagement type to wear with the original band and it holds my wedding band in place. If yours is a double sodered type with a built in engagement ring...maybe a small eternity band worn over it would look nice.

OR as another option, You can wear them on a chain around your neck, Mine ir almost ready to fall off, But I am not ready to resize them, I still have the indentions and tan lines from having thm on for over 13 years, So it will still have some mark, But till I am at goal they stay the same size.

I wear one of my rings on a chain around my neck because it has a lot of sentimetal value. If you'd like to still have something on your finger, treat yourself to a inexpensive ring to wear until it's time to have yours re-sized. Congrats on your progress!

I, like a few of the others, placed a snugger ring in front of my engagement ring to keep it safe. It is the wedding band my husband bought me a few years ago and had gotten really tight, pre-op. Now it's perfect. Eventually I'll resize everything.

Hey. I have lost 160 lbs...down from a size 30 to a size 14... and I haven't re-sized ANY rings.....I moved them to bigger fingers...and put an old "pinkie ring" in front of my wedding ring... but no re-sizing...try it....

Everything that has been said is good-both my wife and I had surgery and we both had to get our rings made smaller. But one thing I did want to say is be careful with your diamonds in water. My wife does water classes at the YMCA and we found out the chlorine level there has to be kept so high it attacks the gold on the prongs holding your diamond in,as it is so soft, and you can loose the dianond-just ask us !!!!! So everyone please be careful at public pools and spas-----Gary

You'll have to ask a jeweler what it's called, but there is a spacer type thing that is temporary that they can put inside your ring. It's flexible and kind of springy and just grabs your finger a little better. I've seen them before. If you go to a jewelry store that has a jeweler in-house, they should be able to help you with this in 5 minutes. GL

Sniff! I LOST my wedding ring (at -100#) because I was too stupid to either stop wearing it or get it re-sized. What a dummy I was. Thank goodness my hubby and I just wear simple silver bands, but I was crushed. He was so sweet to replace it on my anniversary! Now I am -120 and it is slipping and sliding again. You can bet it is going back to the jeweler's any day!
