Question:
What do you do with your intimates that are too big?

I have dropped 4 underwear sizes and gone from a 48 to a 38-40 in bra sizes. I am such a frugal person that I haven't gotten rid of any yet. However, my bra came undone a couple of times last week because it was too big. My panties are falling off - literally. I call them granny panties because they are so big. I did buy smaller sizes, but what do I do with all the old ones? They don't have holes or anything, but some of the underwear isn't new looking anymore. I just can't see another person wearing my used underwear. Besides throwing them away, what do you do with them?    — Heather M. (posted on November 22, 2003)

Bring back the days of the 60's - burn 'em *G*. Seriously, I've just tossed my old "tighty whities" (which were not so tight any more) in the trash....JR

Mine are cotton. I cut out the crotch and waist band and use them for dust rags. They make great rags.

I threw mine out after awhile. I only went down 1 bra size from a 40D to a 38D and for some reason got really lucky that I caught the style I liked on a tremendous sale when Macys decieded not to carry them anymore so I got 13 bras for around $100. As for the bloomers, I only knew about wearing as you called them "granny panties" and actually shopped the clearance racks to try different styles in my new size. I am kinda settling on briefs w/ some lycra so they aren't too baggy if I lose a little more. I was a real cheapie with the bottoms, usually wearing the Ffuit of the Loom or Hanes 6 packs, so it wasn't a major investment. Once you start shopping for new bloomers, you'll enjoy having choices. You absolutely can do this even as a frugal peerson. Enjoy!!!

I think the only thing you can do with big undies is to dust with them.....Unless you know how to sew you can make yourself a panty quilt for your bed, winter is coming you can sew up the legs and make hats out of them.............LOL!

While I would NEVER personally purchase used underwear from a thrift store - there are many many very poor people in this world that do. If they are still in good condition (no stains, holes, etc.) please donate them to your local Salvation Army thrift store or any local thrift store for reused. They are cleaned and will get used. I, like others below, use the bad ones for dust rags if they are good cotton ones. They are extremely good for oil rags as they are absorbant and good for polishing woodwork. Congrats on the size drops - doesn't it feel grand???

I hear some people buy and sell underwear on e-bay. Maybe you should try it. <grin> Seriously, the other suggestions here are great. I will be donating the good ones to charity and tossing the rest when I do my surgery.

Hi! Please concider giving all of the nice (non-stained or holy) undies and bras and donating them to a drop off site for your local battered wives shelter. It is very important that we remember that when these women of all shapes and sizes leave... the generally leave with the clothes on their backs and their children in tow. If the shelter drop off has no need for them (which I am sure they would) they will pass this over to a homeless shelter. when a person has been homeless or sheltered without a change of clothing they are not caring if it is new or used but that it is clean and wearable. Your biggies can be another's blessing. Congrats! Take care and God Bless!

Yeah, I think modesty would dictate increasing your supply of dust rags. It is really not a good idea to donate such personal items. Very few people would accept them from strangers and it would just give me goosebumps all over to imagine my drawers hanging in the Goodwill Store. Don't you just hate having to use a good sponge or rag to clean up something disgusting that you would never want to put in your washer--like cat vomit for example. I would save them for the really gross tasks.

TeeHee! You have to keep one pair, just to look at every once in a while to remember how far you have come! I just recently planted a tree that needed to be staked, so I cut out the waistband of an old pair and tied that tree to the stake. Yep, a big ole pair of pink undies is holding my new tree in place. Quite the conversation piece!

I wasn't sure what you meant by "intimates" and since I'm a plastic surgeon in the business of "making big things smaller ans small things bigger" I checked out the post. The responses cracked me up and I'm still laughing. Great group. Great Posts. Best wishes to you and goodnight !

I like Kara's suggestion, only I would take it a step farther with my big ole granny panties. I'd sew up the legs and make a umbrella. I'm in the same quandry. Too danged cheap to buy new clothes until they either fall off or people tell me that's the last time I can wear that particular outfit. I actually got stuck in a security door at work one day when my blouse was so big it flapped back and the door caught it. I was able to pull my arms down into the shirt, turn around and get myself unstuck then turn around again and put my arms back through the sleeves. How embarrassing. I think the worst underwear is bras. My poor girls keep falling out of the bottom of the cups if I ever raise my arms. It's aggravating but an aggravation I'm happy to endure.
