Question:
I have a trip scheduled 3 weeks after my open surgery. I will be driving, not flying

How far away is it? How long do you anticipate being on the road (hours)? Are you driving by yourself or is someone going along that can help out when you are tired? Are you having lap or open? Are you having just the bypass done or are there other things that need to be done at the same time ie; gallbladder out, hernia repaired. These are all things that will make a big determination on whether or not it is a good idea to be heading out so soon after having had the surgery. I know for myself, I had both lap and open and I was driving within the week, but I also know that just driving down to my doctors and back home which is approximately 3 hours travel time roundtrip would really wipe me out for the first month or so. Check with your surgeon and see how you feel... that is probably the best thing to do.

I actually took a road trip with my kids about 3 weeks after my open RNY last May, about 1.5 hours one way. So, I agree with the other poster that it will depend on how long a trip it is. I highly recommend taking a break every so often to walk around. Good luck and happy trails!
