Question:
What if you did not have your gallbladder removed what are the longterm complications

I am wondering what are the long term complications. Should I be taking meds?    — SHU-SHU (posted on January 29, 2003)

Hi Nina!I did not have a gallbladder removal either but my doc gave me Bile Salts to take for the first 6 months. The name brand is Actigal. They dissolve any stones they come across. Hope it helps you! God bless! Stacy

If you don't have a gallbladder, you're not STORING bile. Only what is currently in the pancreas will be excreted, which is why people get sick when they eat foods over a certain amount of fat. Bile helps break fats down, so when there's not enough it causes indigestion, nausea, diarrhea or other symptoms. My mom always gets a stomachache when she eats too much meat (depending on the fat) because she doesn't have a gallbladder. So, like the previous poster, take bile salts with any meal with fat or meat protein.
