Question:
Kaiser doctor says must be able to demonstrate 30 mins of exercise.
Anyone been told by Kaiser PCP that they have to be able to demonstrate the ability to exercise for 30 mins before they will refer for surgery? How do you demonstrate your ability? — Amy G. (posted on February 4, 2003)

One thing about Kaiser...no one ever seems to be on the same page. This
exercise demonstration is one I haven't heard yet and I have a suspicion if
you mentioned it to another Kaiser doctor they may not have heard of it
either. Just another hoop in which to jump, I do suppose...

Ask him to point to the regulations that state such a requirement. Also it
sounds vague... what is exercise? You park in the parking lot and walk
through the hospital to the doctor's office.. that would be exercise?
Uniformity is the key if Kaiser is applying the rule to some but not others
then they have a discriminatory regulation or enforcement of the
regulation. Lastly, would they ask a cardiac patient to demonstrate they
could exercise for 30 mins before they will do a transplant? Or someone
with a brain tumor to demonstrate that they can do intensive mathematics
for 30 mins before brain surgery?

I got a referral to weight loss surgeon from Kaiser without having to do
such and I have a friend who also got a referral. It was a nurse
practitioner that gave me the referral and not my PCP. I switched
insurance prior to having surgery though.

I have Kaiser, and haven't been told anything like that. I'm all done with
my testing and am now in UCLA's hands. I would sure like to hear
more...Are they asking for a written or phsyical exam? Congrats on your
