Question:
Seeking A Surgeon in AL, MS, GA or TN who will do a revision after 24 years.

What surgeons in Alabama will do a 24 year revision??? One of my friends at work really needs to have a revision. She had her stomach stapled 24 years ago. It stretched, and she gained back all of her weight. Back then , they didn't require they psychological testing that we have to go through now. Our insurance has approved her to have the surgery, BUT, she can't find a surgeon willing to revise and do the bypass part too. They won't touch her, they say that they won't clean up anyone elses mess. I don't consider her a mess, I just consider her a friend who 24 years ago, tried to make her life better and then the pouch stretched. Can anyone help??? We live in Alabama, but Sally says that she doesn't care if she has to go to Mississippi, Georgia and/or Tennessee to find a surgeon. Thanks guys.    — Leigh G. (posted on March 10, 2003)

I am not sure if he will do a revision or not, but it couldn't hurt to ask, Dr. R. Bryan Freeman in Anniston, AL did my surgery. Good Luck!

Look for doctors at the larger teaching hospitals in the area. Try Vanderbilt. They are more likely to have the experience wiht the revisions.

I had a revision from VBG to RNY after 20 years and I'm doing GREAT! I lose a little more slowly than others poundwise but am losing tons of inches. I've gone from a size 34/36 to a 20/22 in 9 months and am thrilled with the results. The surgery was pretty rough but I think it was more from my being 20 years older and far more out of shape than the original surgery. My surgeon is Les Miles at Medical Center East and he's wonderful. Very down to earth and pulls no punches. Good luck.

I would suggest Dr. John Kelly Wright Jr. @ Vanderbilt. He has successfully done revision in the past. He specializes in the RNY Gastric Bypass. The web site for Dr. Wright is: www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/surgery/stomach/. I hope you can find some help for your friend.
