Question:
I want to know , what the symptoms would be indicating a leak,

I was only told I would become extremely ill not able to even speak and would only have 48hrs to get surgery or I would die. I need to know what the physical symptoms are? hoping to avoid dieing here.    — niteshadow181 (posted on June 13, 2005)

Why are you worried about leaks? Your surgery was in 2002. Nearly all leaks occur in NEW poatients, in the first day or two. Anyhow fever, feeling of dread, althought is possible to have a leak and live with it. your body creates a drain path and disposes of the contamination. But any of this after all these years is extremely rare. whats going on?

High fever (mine was 102, and I NEVER run a fever) and a hard lump right under my incision.

If you even suspect a leak go to the emergency room, now. There is no embarassment in caution. Not sure what prompted the question but I hope you are taking care of it.

I am 3 yrs post op and the original poster, I've had sever upper abdominal pain for over a yr, finally found a gastro dr that did a EGD and found that 3/4 of my restriction ring has eroded into my pouch,I had open ryn gastric bypass,my original surgeon adds a restriction band for all his RNY patients that want it, its just a little more insurance ( the pouch is restricted from stretching over time by this ring) its not leaking now but was told if it did I would become very ill and only have 48 hrs to get to surgery. At the moment it isnt leaking, and I am critically low on iron at the moment and since the erosion is stable .I need to get my blood built back up before surgery, Surgeon didnt say what the symptoms were just that I would become extremely ill. I want to know what to look for.( my original surgeon has semi-retired)

i had my surgery on 4/29/05, everything was fine, i had no pain. the next morning i woke up in extreme pain and very high fever. found out it was a leak. believe me, when it is a leak, you wil know it because you will feel in your body something is wrong.
