Question:
Question for Obesityhelp web site people

Why are pop up ads coming up on this site now? I've had to install a pop up stopper. One pop up ad was for some diet pill so you can lose while you sleep! Why have wls??? I guess it helps to pay for the bills but from now on while cruising this site I'll leave my pop up stopper running. Sorry, but I'm just disappointed. I don't recall pop up ads here before. Just wondering why the change and for some "lose weight quick pills" on a site where we know you can't lose weight with miracle pills. ;) I'm not angry, just disappointed.    — Danmark (posted on February 13, 2004)

I am in here two or three times a day and I have never seen a pop up add. I don't get why you get them and I don't. MJ

I get the darn things to! I even get ones from some stupid thing called SAVE(notice it is a 4 letter word)That go around my pop up blocker. If any one has any ideas to rid me of this "SAVE" thing please let me know.

I started getting alot of pop ups on this site and others , so I finally installed ad aware and it has stoppped almost all . I am not going to be able to get technical , but when you go to alot of sites , something about cookies and others being able to track where you go on the computer and what your interests are . invasion of privacy , but it happens , so from there that is why we get all the pop ups . some internet service providers , automatically block these , some don't . I think the address is www.adaware.com , it is great , give it a try ....

Patti is correct - there are no pop-ups on this site, so you probably have a spyware program that is popping up ads regardless of the website you are on. Get a program such as ad-aware or SpyBot to scan and get rid of any programs causing your pop-ups

Do you have any programs from WhenU? Like weathercast? It's a spyware program and pops up ads pertinant to the site you're browsing. The add says it's from WhenU at the very bottom in fine print so you know it's not from the website you're visiting. Pain in the rear!

I do not get POP-UP from either of my browsers, IE or Netscape. Therefore your pop-ups are coming via your ISP if you go to www.tucows.com you can find some "Free" or Shareware programs that you can download to stop the ads, I use www.contentwatch.com because I have children for a download fee this will clean your computer of all the spy wear and ad worms that have been implanted into your system. (they did have a 30-day free trial period) Also refrain from giving your email address out to unknown sites or use an email address that is free and you only visit occassionally. In addition, when you are adding software read that fine print before you click "agree" some of those sites ask for your permission to download software that is Adware, which you can uncheck prior to downloading.

Thanks to all of you. I am delighted that the problem is NOT from THIS web site. I could'nt believe that this site would do that... especially all the "lose weight quick" ads that came up when surfing here. (This is my home page). First of all I have a program called POP UP STOPPER. Also I have another for Spyware called WEBROOT SPY SWEEPER. So I am very concious of spyware, and also I keep my virus updates (Norton) current. I also have ALL Updates for XP Professional. I only mention this so you all know I am not careless of the dangers of the web. Of course no matter how carefull we are we can't defend against everything which seems to be what happened to me this time. However I do have a program called Weatherbug. (Not the other one mentioned by someone). It IS the free version which has adds. Again, my spyware program kept things clean. HOWEVER, upon thinking back, I believe my pop ups on THIS site started AFTER visting download.com (DON'T GO THERE!) for some shareware programs. The pop ups here were AFTER going to that site. Hmmmm. However my spyware programs says there is'nt any spyware installed anymore. Go figure. Anywho, seems the problem is NOT with this site. :) I'm delighted! So I'll download some other spyware programs and see if they find anything. All these problems with pop ups is very weird as I am diligent about pop ups, spyware and virus'. Go figure! ;)

I don't get popups on this site anymore. I haven't downloaded anything to stop them. What I did do was to clean up my hard drive. If you have IE click on Tools/Internet Options/Delete Cookies/OK then Delete Files/Delete Offline Content/OK Then Clear History/OK. When this is finished, go to start/programs/accessories/system tools/maintainance wizard and do some cleaning. This will clean up your drive, defragment the drive, fix errors in the drive. My computer runs alot better since I've been doing this every week. Nothing important gets deleted just the crap like cookies and temporary files related to your internet and email use. Make sure you write down your ID and password info for all the sites you use regularly and keep it in a safe place before you do this clean up. You may need to re-enter the ID and password for some sites you visit after you do the clean up. Hope this helps some of you with those annoying pop ups.

Yes, it definately is NOT this site doing the pop ups. I finally switched out hard drives. It is'nt doing it anymore which means "spyware" was on my other drive. Thanks all for the advice. :)
