Question:
Friend with Vertical Silastic Ringed Gastroplasty in 1980s

I have a friend who had the Vertical Silastic Ringed Gastroplasty (stomach stapling with a restrictive ring) in 1980s. She, as others, was not successful and would like to find out her options for a more successful surgery that is offered today. Does anyone know her options? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If there are any web sites or someone she can talk to, please let us know.    — robynshelton (posted on January 23, 2005)

What she needs to do is research for doctors in her area that do revisions, She may find some information on revisions on the site at the main entrance. She may not find doctors on this site that come out and say that they do revisions, she may have to call their offices to find out this information. I know that The Wish Center does revisions. There is one in San Antonio TX, I am not sure how far away that is from where you are at. I am sure that there must be other locations in your state or the close by states to you. Tell her good luck.

These three Yahoo groups are good sources of information on revisions: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/WLSrevisionsupport http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-Revision http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DS_Revision

I too had the Vertical Silastic Ringed Gastroplasy in 1983. For a while it worked, but long term I gained back my weight, plus more. On March 3, 2003, I had it revised to gastric bypass. I haven't had any complications other then my surgery went almost 6 hours as the surgeon said he had never seen anyone with as much scar tissue as I had from my old surgery. I'm 22 months out and have lost about 180 lbs. with about 25 more to go. I never get hungry and still can only eat about 2-4 ounces at a time. I don't know if my new stomach doesn't stretch as much as someone who has never had it done, but I really can't eat that much at a time. If you or your friend want more information, please e-mail me.

I too had a VBG in 1981. I just had a revision on the 27th of Sept 2004. My surgery was done by Dr. Helmuth Billy in Ventura CA He is awesome. I have lost 41 1/2 pounds to date. I did have to have my anastomosis dilated on the 20th of Dec. But I am fine now. I never gained all my weight back, but I certainly was way overweight and couldn't keep off below 240. I am finally on a road with a shot at keeping it off. Tell her to check with the Bariatric Association or just look under the docs on Obesity Help. But find a reputable surgeon and see who does revisions. It isn't too difficult. I had it done laparoscopically and it was great! Dr. Billy also comes to No CA. I don't know where your friend lives, but hopefully this will help her. Email me if you have further questions. Hugs. Jo
