Question:
Can you ask for a longer Bypass?

Is is possible or "normal" to ask your surgeon to give you a longer intestinal bypass(more then 100cm) in fear not losing enough or gaining weight back in years to come. Lap RNY    — elifritz (posted on October 10, 2001)

My surgeon bypasses 200cm of small intestine routinely. Hope this helps.

My surgeon only does one surgery and only bypasses a certain amount. He bypasses less so we don't have as much malabsorbtion.

My surgeon bypasses different lenghts depending on the needed weight loss. He explained that by bypassing the same amount for each patient, someone weighing 250 will lose 100 pounds and another person weighing 550 pounds would only lose 100 pounds. So really, the heavier the person, the more needs to be bypassed to achieve an effective weight loss.

When I asked my surgeon, he said he does approx 150cm for everyone LAP RNY. But you have to be 40 to 60 BMI. He doesnt go any bigger than that with a LAP.

My docs will customize your surgery to you, based on your medical history, your desire, your willingness to follow his program, your discussion with him--when you both see eye to eye. But he does open. I have something like 400cm bypassed, based on a theoretical 25 ft total length. I didn't lose weight any faster than my proximal buddies, but I think I keep it off with less "dieting" effort.
